Information for international students
Coming from a partner institution or don’t meet the entry requirements for your preferred bachelor course? Explore
pathways information for international students
.
What are pathways?
Pathways usually begin with an associate degree, diploma or advanced diploma and guarantee your entry into further study*, often with credit and a reduced duration for your destination course, whether that be a higher level vocational qualification, or an undergraduate degree.
As a dual-sector university, we offer Australia’s largest range of Pathways via an integrated system of progression between our high-quality qualifications, all at the one university.
Pathways can help you achieve your study goals, even if you don’t meet the entry requirements for your ideal course. They are also an excellent way to gain additional credentials and experience during your study journey.
Why choose an RMIT Pathway
Two qualifications (or more)
Graduate with at least two qualifications and a suite of experience. You’ll graduate with practical skills early on and keep building towards your long-term career goals.
No-hassle transfers
Your transition from TAFE to further study happens at the same university – no need to worry about completing qualifications at separate institutes and navigating multiple applications for credit.
Possibilities and choices
As the largest dual-sector university in Australia, we have an extensive range of pathways across multiple study areas, meaning you get to tailor your education to suit your goals and needs.
The majority of pathways award credit for some or all of the study you have undertaken in the entry qualification, reducing the time required to complete the destination course. Some pathways take the same time to complete as the standalone destination course, but you graduate with two qualifications from a globally recognised university instead of one!
*Guaranteed entry is dependent on successful completion of the preceeding courses in the pathway. In some cases you will need to successfully complete and meet other specific requirements such a minimum GPA, to be guaranteed entry to the undergraduate degree.
Packaged Pathways
Our Packaged Pathways connect TAFE courses and undergraduate degrees in a single application package, giving you the confidence to achieve your dream.
This streamlined entry means you submit one application and, if successful, secure your spot in your desired bachelor’s degree. Upon successfully completing the first qualification, you'll automatically advance to the next and graduate with two internationally recognised RMIT qualifications.
If you enrol in a Packaged Pathway but decide you don’t want to continue to the bachelor's degree, you can still choose to exit your pathway and graduate from the entry point qualification (e.g. diploma) or look at what alternative Standard Pathways are available with your initial qualification.
This option is ideal if you know where you want to go and are looking for a steady and secure academic journey.
Additional entry requirements
Some entry qualifications will require an ATAR or an additional selection task. Prerequisites may vary based on the pathway and course. You will need to read the full admissions information on the entry course page for entry requirements, prerequisites and additional requirements.
Eligibility for a Packaged Pathway
Domestic Packaged Pathways are only available to Australian citizens, permanent residents and New Zealand citizens. International students have separate pathway packages available and should visit our
international pathways
page for information.
Applicants who have completed VCE Vocational Major or unscored VEC will be eligible for some Packaged Pathways with diploma or advanced diploma entry points. Please refer to the VTAC course search for specific entry requirements.
If you are a SNAP student, you can include Packaged Pathways within your preferences and be considered as per any other course available on VTAC.
How to apply for a Packaged Pathway
You can apply for a Packaged Pathway either through VTAC or direct to RMIT, depending on your eligibility. Note that there are specific VTAC codes for either method.
To apply for a Packaged Pathway, you only need to submit one application. This covers all courses in the pathway – from your entry course through to your destination course.
Once you successfully complete each stage, you'll automatically progress to the next, without needing to re-apply.
Check the relevant entry course's apply page for specific information on which application system you are eligible to apply through, as well as to find the relevant VTAC or apply direct code for your Packaged Pathway.
Standard Pathways
Our Standard Pathways provide you with the opportunity to choose your educational journey, with a wide range of courses, entry and exit points.
You'll simplify your study experience by connecting TAFE and further study, including higher education at RMIT (with pre-defined credit or increases in academic scores), enabling you to complete part of your degree in TAFE and still get to your desired destination course.
This pathway is perfect if you want the flexibility to choose your next steps as you go.
Eligibility for a Standard Pathway
You are eligible to apply for a Standard Pathway if you a domestic applicant and you meet the entry requirements for the entry course in the Pathway.
For some Standard Pathways this may include selection tasks or other additional requirements in addition to the course entry requirements. Some Standard Pathways may also select based on your ATAR, but it will be the ATAR for the entry course (such as an Associate Degree) which will be lower than if you applied direct for the destination Bachelor degree.
Make sure that you familiarise yourself with the full admissions information for the entry course prior to applying.
How to apply for a Standard Pathway
To apply for a Standard Pathway you submit your application for the entry course in the pathway, either via VTAC or direct to RMIT, depending on your eligibility which is outlined on the entry course apply page.
As you progress through each course in the pathway you will be given the opportunity to submit a separate application for the next qualification.
As long as you continue to meet the specified requirements for each step in the pathway, you will be guaranteed entry (where guaranteed entry is available as specified in the pathway details) and any available credit will be applied.
Alternate ways to gain entry into a bachelor degree at RMIT
If there are no formal pathways into a particular course that you are interested in, there may be other ways you can gain entry.
Depending on the course, you may be able to gain entry using a vocational qualification, or you may be able to apply for a related undergraduate degree and transfer once you have successfully completed.
