Your Academic Experience
The 2025 student academic experience
This information outlines our approach to support, teaching and assessment for new and continuing students in the 2025-26 academic year. It also signposts you to other more in-depth online information.
Updates made to the 2025-26 student academic experience information
What will teaching be like in 2025-26?
All students studying on an on-campus programme will receive in-person teaching. Where online and digital options enhance the student experience, or have been requested by our students, we will continue to use them to benefit their learning.
How will my degree be assessed?
You can be confident that all programmes fairly assess the knowledge, skills and abilities learned during your degree. Assessment approaches will vary by degree programme and the needs of external bodies. In-person invigilated summative examinations are just one of the ways in which we assess.
For more information on the approaches to assessment for your programme, contact your School.
Keeping you up to date
We’ve designed an
induction programme
to welcome you into our friendly student community. Please look out for email communications about this.
Head to our Welcome webpages
to see the steps you need to take before coming to Newcastle. Please note this information will be updated during the summer for the 2025-26 academic year. There is helpful information about arranging travel and confirming accommodation, our airport meet and greet service and immigration so please read through carefully.
Once you’ve started your programme, look out for the regular student newsletters which will keep you up to date with the latest University news, events and opportunities. You can also bookmark the
Student Homepage
where you will find useful links and resources.
If you have a question, please
check our FAQs
as they may contain the answer you need.
Term dates for 2025–26
The 2025-26 academic year starts on
Monday 15 September 2025
. All students must aim to arrive on campus in Newcastle by 15 September for the start of Semester 1. Some programmes may have an earlier start date, if this applies to you your academic school at the University will write to you to confirm this.
You can start the registration process online before you arrive. Information is available on our
Student Welcome pages
. Please note this information will be updated for the 2025-26 academic year on 1 August.
It is important that you arrive on time to ensure you don’t miss any important induction or teaching and assessment activities. However, if you are going to be late due to delays caused by issues such as immigration or travel delays, arrival up until

may be possible depending on your degree programme and subject to approval. To seek approval for a late start please
complete this form
or you may contact
Latestartrequest@newcastle.ac.uk

Students can still complete their registration if necessary after they arrive, but they must be able to attend classes from the latest arrival date approved by the University.

What about student accommodation?
How do I apply for accommodation?
If you've made us your 'firm' choice University, you can apply for your student accommodation from 10 June 2025. Our
Accommodation Guarantee
applies to applications received by
30 June 2025 for postgraduate taught
students and by
noon on 28 July 2025 for undergraduate
students.
Please see the
Accommodation Guarantee
for full eligibility criteria.
Before you apply take some time to research
your accommodation options
. Keep in mind that, while we guarantee eligible students a room, this may not be the exact one you had in mind. Additionally, familiarise yourself with the
ways to apply
- you will apply either through our Advanced Booking method or by submitting a traditional application. These differ depending on your course type, the duration of your stay, if you're coming with your family or as a couple, or if you need a room suitable for your medical needs.
When can I arrive?
Moving-in day is always an exciting time and in September thousands of new students join us. To allow for a smooth and safe arrival, we will ask you to book an arrival slot. You'll do this as part of your mandatory accommodation induction. This will be available around two weeks before your arrival. Arrival slots for University-owned accommodation will be available from
8 September for international students
and
between 11 - 14 September for students in the UK
. We are unable to offer earlier arrival dates.
