The
Prajñā Stūpa
The Prajñā Stūpa at Lumbinī Buddhist University
The
Prajñā Stūpa
stands as a testament to the enduring wisdom and compassion of Buddha’s teachings at Lumbinī Buddhist University. Established after the vision of an international Buddhist university at Buddha’s birthplace, the university was founded on November 9, 2004. The Stūpa, located at the heart of the campus, serves as both a spiritual sanctuary and an architectural symbol of Buddhist wisdom. Its presence reinforces the university’s commitment to academic learning and spiritual growth.
Architecture of the Prajñā Stūpa
The
Prajñā Stūpa
is a meticulously designed structure that enshrines sacred relics of Lord Śākyamuni Buddha. Modeled after the Svayambhū Stūpa, it features a central dome symbolizing enlightenment, crowned by a Harmikā with the Buddha’s eyes in four directions, representing the watchful wisdom of Buddha. The Stūpa is further adorned with thirteen tiers representing the path to enlightenment and is surrounded by statues of Buddhas at the cardinal points, symbolizing the reach of Buddha’s teachings in all directions.
Activities Around the Stūpa
The
Prajñā Stūpa
is a vibrant hub of spiritual and academic life at Lumbinī Buddhist University. Monthly full moon prayer gatherings bring together students, monks, and faculty for collective meditation, chanting, and reflection. The Stūpa also hosts major Buddhist festivals like Losar, Saga Dawa, and Buddha Purnima, during which the site is beautifully adorned with prayer flags, flowers, and lamps. These activities foster a deep connection between academic learning and spiritual practice for the university community.
A Symbol of Wisdom and Compassion
Enshrining sacred relics donated by Prof. Saw Htut Sandar, the
Prajñā Stūpa
connects the university with the historical Buddha and the legacy of Buddhist teachings. Its significance has drawn visits from Nepal’s political leaders and international diplomats, emphasizing its role as both a spiritual and academic landmark. The Stūpa continues to inspire wisdom, compassion, and mindfulness in all who visit, reflecting Lumbinī Buddhist University’s mission to uphold and propagate Buddha’s teachings.
