General Music Education at JMA
starts in  Pre-Kindergarten (PK) through 5th grade.
It aims to introduce students to the multifaceted world of music, fostering a love for music and developing foundational skills. This comprehensive approach encompasses creating, performing, responding to, and connecting with various musical experiences.
Music education has numerous benefits for elementary students, including enhanced cognitive abilities, improved social-emotional development, increased creativity, and a stronger connection to different cultures. Exposure to music also fosters discipline, persistence, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
By engaging students in these varied and age-appropriate musical experiences, elementary general music programs play a vital role in their overall development and set the stage for continued engagement with music throughout their lives.
At JMA, elementary students in music will focus on these 4 musical elements:
Musical Exploration
Students engage with various musical concepts through singing, movement, and instrument play. This includes exploring elements like rhythm, melody, tempo, and dynamics.
Creating and Improvising:
Students are encouraged to create their own melodies, rhythms, and even simple compositions, fostering creativity and self-expression. This can involve improvising answers to musical phrases or creating rhythmic patterns using body percussion or classroom instruments.
Performing
Students participate in singing games, perform on classroom instruments, and showcase their musical skills in school performances for Grandparents Day, Christmas Play and Move Up Day.
Connecting with Music
Music education helps students understand the relationships between music, other art forms, and other academic disciplines. It also exposes them to diverse cultures and historical periods through the study of music, fostering cultural awareness and appreciation.
Elementary School Music
PK-2nd grade:
Focus on hands-on activities, movement exploration, singing, and playing simple instruments, such as unpitched percussion. Emphasis is placed on exploring musical opposites (example:  fast/slow, high/low) and developing a steady beat. Pk – 1st grade curriculum focuses on Carnival of the Animals.
2nd - 3rd grade:
Introduce more complex rhythms and explore diverse musical styles. Students will use hand and bucket drums to assist in understanding grouped rhythms and musical patterns.
3rd-5th grade
Introduce more complex concepts like reading standard notation, understanding musical forms, and exploring diverse musical styles.
4th - 5th grade
Music Theory with Recorder Karate.  Students will be able to read, play, sing and understand basic notation. They will showcase their proficiency on the recorder during the Move Up Day Performance.
JMA Elementary Chorus Grades 3 - 5
John Milledge provides students in the 3rd – 5th grade an opportunity to learn and perform music as a group. No audition needed. Just a love for music and singing. Students in chorus will focus on developing basic vocal skills, musicality and teamwork. Several Performance Opportunities throughout the year including a chorus concert in the spring.
From these students a select few will be invited to join the GMEA Honor Chorus (Georgia Music Educators Association) held in Athens, Ga. This is a state-wide event where students get to experience singing in a mass choir under the direction of a notable choral conductor.
Middle School Music
6th Grade Stage Craft and Theater Class
The overall goal is to introduce students to the exciting world of theater, build their confidence, and learn the fundamental skills for acting and theatrical performance. The curriculum will focus on team building, vocal projection, movement, pantomime, constructive feedback, memorization, character development, set design, research of theater careers, and a class performance.
7th Grade Music History
Students will explore music from various historical periods and cultures, focusing on developing listening skills, understanding musical elements and connecting music to broader historical and cultural context. Concentrating on Historical periods, musical elements, composers, genres, and performance.
