What we offer
Our emergency department provides exceptional care for virtually any illness or injury. Here’s what you can expect:
Award-winning care
Long Island Jewish Medical Center is one of just 94 emergency departments nationwide to receive the Lantern Award from the Emergency Nurses Association. The award recognizes EDs demonstrating exceptional and innovative performance in leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research.
New York state-certified stroke center
In 2023, the hospital was awarded the coveted Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) for implementing specific quality improvement measures that ensure stroke patients receive the highest standards of care for thrombolytic treatment.
New York state-certified percutaneous coronary intervention center
Split-flow process
for maximum efficiency
After entering the ED, all patients are registered, reviewed and assessed for emergency severity (triage) in one step. Critical patients are immediately taken to a main ED bed to receive care, but for less critical patients, the path has been modified to eliminate duplicative steps.
The primary nurse and physician assessment and test orders are all parallel processes. The time patients occupy a treatment room or bed is reduced by using an internal results waiting/continuing care area. Patients move to the resources they need only when they need them. This process ensures that patients are waiting only for true rate-limiting steps, like the time it takes to analyze tests or to conduct a procedure.
Behavioral health unit
Open 24/7, our six-bed high acuity behavioral health unit (addressing challenging conditions with significant, unpredictable needs) and our two-bed low acuity unit (addressing less critical needs) allow specialty psychiatric care in a private setting. Our emergency psychiatry physicians, social workers and patient engagement specialists are here for all patients’ needs. And as part of the medical center that houses Zucker Hillside Hospital, our department has access to one of the most progressive behavioral health teams in the region.
Discharge lounge:
Our discharge lounge was originally created with grant funding through DSRIP to serve high-risk patients who have social determinants of health. Today we serve all patients with follow-up resources and services through Northwell and our physician practices, so when patients and families leave the ED they have connections to prevent future health risks.
Academic tertiary care center
This designation means that you can expect the highest quality emergency care from renowned experts in their fields. Our senior physicians participate in scholarly research activities, teach at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and provide supervision for doctors in training (residents).
Specially trained nurses
Our ED includes a dedicated team of sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE) trained to assist victims of sexual abuse. A physician and SANE nurse provide medical assistance, emotional support, and essential information to comfortably heal and function in society.
