Quote from Bill Tolbert reads, "Everyone has ideas we can learn from. If you surround yourself with yourself, what do you learn? Nothing. If you surround yourself with people who are different, you can learn so much more."
Metro believes that everyone in our region should have access to what they need to live a safe, healthy, and connected life. When the communities facing the greatest challenges are supported, the entire region benefits.
The
Strategic Plan to Advance Racial Equity
guides how Metro partners, plans and invests across the region. From housing and transportation to parks and environmental stewardship, Metro centers racial equity and accessibility in its decisions, policies, and long-term goals.
This work is guided by strategies developed in partnership with the communities of greater Portland. Community voices help define priorities, shape investments, and identify where systems need to change. Equity-focused grantmaking, inclusive engagement, and targeted public investments are just some of the ways Metro responds to what communities ask for.
Over the past decade, Metro has made significant investments and taken major steps toward advancing racial equity. These efforts have laid a strong foundation, but equity is not a destination. It’s an ongoing commitment that requires us to evolve alongside the region we serve.
Metro’s equity work is about more than addressing past harm. It’s about working together to build a future where every community has the opportunity to thrive. As the region changes and new challenges emerge, Metro remains committed to learning, adapting and being accountable to the people we serve.
