Northwell Health’s
Katz Women’s Hospital
at
Long Island Jewish Medical Center
became just the second institution on Long Island to be awarded an Advanced Certification in Perinatal Care by the Joint Commission.
The new certification, which the Joint Commission created in collaboration with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, focuses on improving care for both mothers and babies. It focuses on a multidisciplinary approach to maternal care to improve outcomes for both complicated and uncomplicated pregnancies.
“The Advanced Certification in Perinatal Care is a testament to the caliber of care we are proud to provide for our patients and their growing families, and we are honored to have achieved this distinction,” said
Kfier Kuba, MD
, associate director of perinatal quality at Katz Women’s Hospital. “This designation demonstrates our continued commitment to delivering the safest and highest-quality care, and helping our patients achieve the best possible outcomes.”

In order to receive the Advanced Certification in Perinatal Care, hospitals are required to demonstrate excellence in:
Integrated, coordinated and patient-centered prenatal through postpartum care, including both complicated and uncomplicated pregnancies
Early identification of
high-risk pregnancies
and births
Management of mothers’ and/or newborns’ risks
Direct care or stabilization and safe transfer of mothers and/or newborns with identified or unanticipated risks or complications
Education and information about perinatal services to help mothers make informed decisions about care, treatment or services
Ongoing quality improvement processes, in addition to the Joint Commission’s perinatal care measure set
“Holding ourselves to these new, even more rigorous and evidence-based standards from the Joint Commission shows how we never stop striving to provide the best care for our patients,” said
Olena Predtechenska, MD
, interim neonatal intensive care unit medical director at Katz Women’s Hospital. “We are continually investing in the latest technology, techniques and training to ensure the safety and well-being of our patients. Our multidisciplinary team supports families every step of the way, starting before delivery and throughout their NICU journey.”
Katz Women’s Hospital is the second facility on Long Island to receive the designation, and the fourth in New York. Only 36 health facilities across the country have received the certification.
Katz offers many services and programs for women at all stages of pregnancy and for multiple pregnancy complications. The
Center for High-Risk Pregnancy and Fetal Health
helps mothers who are facing complications, and is connected to the
Cohen Children’s Medical Center
, a regional perinatal center with a Level 4 neonatal intensive care unit to care for the most complicated cases.
The hospital has also developed a bereavement committee to help mothers and families who are experiencing pregnancy loss.
The
Katz Institute for Women’s Health
is dedicated to improving the health of women across their lifespan, including wellness and personalized care delivery. The Katz Institute provides a complete healthcare connection and defines the standards of excellence in patient-centered women’s health care. The Katz Institute is a convener and amplifier of Northwell Health’s women’s health initiatives, focused on supporting sex- and gender-specific research, providing expert, coordinated clinical care and educating the community on prevention and well-being.
