पेट्रोलियम तथा विस्फोटक सुरक्षा संगठन (पेसो), पूर्ववर्ती विस्फोटक विभाग, 05/09/1898 को शुरू होने के बाद से, विस्फोटक, संपीड़ित गैसों और पेट्रोलियम जैसे खतरनाक पदार्थों की सुरक्षा के लिए एक नोडल एजेंसी के रूप में देश की सेवा कर रहा है। पेसो का प्रमुख कार्य विस्फोटक अधिनियम 1884 और पेट्रोलियम अधिनियम 1934 के तहत सौंपी गई जिम्मेदारियों और उनके अधीन बनाए गए नियमों को
"सुरक्षा सर्वोपरि"
इस घोष वाक्य के साथ संचालित करना है।
पेसो का मुख्यालय महाराष्ट्र के नागपुर में है और यह आगरा, चेन्नई, फ़रीदाबाद, कोलकाता और मुंबई स्थित पाँच अंचल कार्यालयों तथा देश भर में उनके अधीनस्थ उप-अंचल कार्यालयों के माध्यम से कार्य करता है।
