Az alapvető jogok biztosa a Szlovák Köztársaság Alkotmányában és az alapvető jogok biztosáról szóló törvényben foglalt esetekben és helyzetekben tud segíteni.
Közbenjárhat például a közigazgatási szervek mulasztása – pl. az eljárások indokolatlan elhúzódása – esetén, nem segíthet azonban a szomszédvitákat, szerződéses viszonyokat, hagyatéki eljárásokat vagy kölcsönöket érintő ügyekben.
