This is Wood?!?
Woodcarvings
Yes. Inside the Museum, the permanent
exhibits
contain more than 500 life-like woodcarvings of birds. Almost all of the nearly 300 species shown in the Museum are Vermont birds. Most were
carved by
Bob Spear.
And wildlife
But don’t stop there. We offer
events
throughout the year, from monthly bird
walks
year-round, weekly bird walks in late spring, and workshops, lectures, and
programs
about birds throughout the year. We have a
webcam
pointed at our feeders and keep track of
sightings
on the Museum property.
We are where natural history meets art.

Nature Inspires
In the tradition of scientific illustration, the Museum was founded to teach about birds through the unique approach of wood carvings:
three-dimensional, realistic sculptures
. These provide not only an alternative to taxidermy, but connect us to traditional arts.
Woodcarvers
include our Founder,
Bob Spear
, and current
carvers
share their work with us. They continue to enrich the collection, teach the craft, and use our site as a meeting point.
Sharing Art
: We go beyond wood carving as well: we host an annual
art show
, with different themes each year. We offer
programs
for artists of varying ages and skills, from
learning to see
, to carving workshops with wood,
soap
, to art programs on paper, canvas, fiber, and more.
We work with new and established Vermont artists, sometimes run art contests for children, and have a great time connecting art and science.
