Setting the foundation.

Every morning students in Kindergarten greet each other in a community meeting in which they make connections to friends, learn to speak up in a group and build community.

Morning Meeting
Through age appropriate literature, Kindergarten students develop a positive self image by learning about family structures and traditions, gender and gender expression and race.
9:00am
Identity
Traveling to the art studio, students learn about famous artists such as Kandinsky and connect to their identity curriculum through creating self portraits and family hearts.

Art
Students engage in hands on research projects and have learned about topics such as simple machines, bridges, animal habitats and weather through experiments, field trips and interviews with experts.

Project Based Learning in Science
Through block building, dramatic play, and art projects students practice collaboration, conflict resolution, independence, creativity, curiosity, and self regulation and awareness skills.

After school students have the option of taking enrichment classes such as chess, art, cooking, coding, Mandarin, karate and more.

Students build number sense, note patterns and relationships, internalize operations, create and represent mathematical ideas, calculate accurately, and build toward efficient use of algorithms.

Students meet in small groups to explore skills in fine and performing arts, and in science class to explore different forms of energy, learning to differentiate between potential and kinetic energy.

Students meet to explore library resources, in person and online, and in small groups to explore and develop reading strategies at their level to build comprehension, stamina, and research skills.

Students study indigenous populations and the impact of European exploration; then New Amsterdam and the effects colonialism had on indigenous people and enslaved people transported to the colonies.

7th graders hold a mock trial of Galileo for heresy against the Catholic Church, playing roles of witnesses and attorneys, seeing the connections between science, religion, and historical eras.

Social Studies
Students deepen the study of biological building blocks, with cells, DNA structure, protein synthesis, heredity, and genetics; they build Punnett squares to identify dominant and recessive traits.

Students debate the motivations and perspectives of characters in novels such as "The Outsiders" and "Pride".

Language Arts
Students collaborate to produce a one-act performance. Through rehearsal and hands-on experience, they learn how to create a polished work of theater, complete with costumes, lights, props, and sound.

Drama
Students travel to Randall's Island for practices and games against fellow independent schools. And at LEGO Robotics, they build and program robots to compete in local and national competitions.
