Deputy Director of Nursing Services
Welcome to
nursing service department of Federal Medical Centre Asaba. The department was
created along with other departments in 1998 when the hospital was taken over
by the Federal Ministry of Health. It has over four hundred (400) registered
nurses with three hundred and four (304) bed spaces.
The
department believes that humans are biopsychosocial beings; as such provides
care/services that would meet the physical, social, mental and spiritual needs of
the individual accessing care in the Centre and beyond.
The
department also believes that care for the sick, families and friends should be
individualized, negotiated (informed choice), planned and prioritized, as well
as holistic. Services are provided to prevent illness, promote health, restore
health and rehabilitate clients. We apply both nursing theories as well as
psychosocial theories when providing care to our clients. One of such theories
is Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.
The
department also adopts biological principles that aid provision of adequate and
evidence based quality care to her clients, centered on patients' satisfaction.

Services
The
department has staff nurses in all areas of specialization in nursing in
Nigeria. We provide services that meet the physical, social, mental and
spiritual needs of our clients. Some of these services include:
Physical (Head-to-toe) assessment of patients on admission. patient's need assessment
Focused and ongoing assessment of patients throughout admission period. Use of nursing process to prioritize and individualize care provided to our clients
Collaborating
with other health care professionals in ensuring patients receive holistic
care.
Creating therapeutic environment. Keeping adequate records of patient's drugs, instruments, equipment and care provided to patients.
Collecting
and maintaining accurate data for hospital statistics and research purposes.
Identifying, documenting changes in health status which interferes with
client's ability to meet basic needs.
Monitoring and evaluating client's care.
Providing emergency nursing services.
Conducting family planning services, antenatal care, delivery services and postnatal care.
Providing wound care to patients. Ensuring patient's safety.
Client teaching, counseling, discharge advice and follow-up care.
Monitoring patients' lab results and reporting abnormal to as necessary and promptly.
Ensuring general organization and management of patient's wards and clinics.
Provision of medication and dietary guides to our patients.
Conducting research that would help improve outcome of nursing care.
Nursing audit and Performance evaluation.
Training /
Seminars Awards
The
department conducts clinical training for nursing students of National Open
University of Nigeria (NOUN) and generic nurses on internship. The department
also grants support-training to students of school of
midwifery Asaba and others.
Several seminars in core nursing and health specialties have been organized by the department, including the MCPD programs.
