Our Journey
The Birth of a Political Revolution
Aam Aadmi Party was formed on 2 October 2012, on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi ji.
AAP was born out the India Against Corruption movement, spearheaded by crores of common people in our country.
Along with innovative campaigns, Aam Aadmi Party pioneered crowd-sourced and transparent political funding.
Aam Aadmi Party made its electoral debut in December 2013, contesting the Delhi Assembly elections.
A Debut that Shook the Political Class
In 2013, AAP raised the issue of faulty electricity and water bills, sparking widespread protests against the government’s ties to the power discoms and water mafia.
Subsequently, a massive campaign was launched and Arvind Kejriwal sat on a 14-day hunger strike. The campaign received 10.5 lakh signatures.
The campaign was a resounding success with the people of Delhi and AAP secured 28 seats with a 29.49% vote share in 2013 Delhi Elections.
Arvind Kejriwal took oath as Delhi’s 2nd youngest CM.
Unseen integrity: Arvind Kejriwal resigns as Delhi CM
Despite lacking financial resources and organisational strength, AAP Government was formed on 28th December, 2013.
The 49 days AAP Government made significant strides and transformed Delhi.
Free supply of 667 litres of water daily for households.
50% subsidy in electricity bills.
No red or blue beacons on official cars, bringing an end to ‘VIP culture’.
All government schools surveyed for infrastructure deficiency and given Rs.1 lakh each for immediate repairs.
Launched anti-corruption and nursery admission helplines.
New permits given to 5,500 autos.
In February 2014, Arvind Kejriwal resigned in protest after failing to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill in the Delhi assembly.
Aam Aadmi Party contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections all over India and won 4 Lok Sabha seats.
A Landslide Victory In Delhi
After the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, AAP took it’s 49-day government’s achievements to the people, pledging to combat corruption.
AAP’s rallying cry became “Paanch Saal Kejriwal,” became an anthem.
We got support across caste, class, and religious lines which set the stage for a grand victory.
In the Delhi Assembly, AAP secured 67 out of 70 seats with a record-breaking 54% vote share.
Ray of Hope in Punjab
In Punjab 2017 elections, AAP emerged as the main opposition party with a vote share of 23.7%.
While in Delhi, with significant increase in vote share AAP won 49 seats in the MCD elections.
AAP brings Public Service to your Doorstep
In 2018, 1st time in the history of India an innovative scheme like doorstep delivery of services was launched.
Our government also launched Mission Buniyad and Chunauti 2018, aimed at improving reading skills of govt school students between 6-8th Std.
Programs like Happiness Curriculum, dedicated to holistic well being of students were launched.
Delhi elections & a global pandemic
In February 2020 Delhi elections, AAP made history in politics by winning the trust of people for third time in a row, with 62 out of 70 seats and 53.57% of the votes.
March saw a life threatening pandemic with the spread of COVID-19, and AAP sprang into action. Delhi government, led by AAP, proactively worked with the people of Delhi to tackle the unprecedented pandemic.
The AAP government’s methods in Delhi to tackle the coronavirus epidemic, with respect to hospital management, home isolation, ration distribution, and economic incentives for weaker segments, became a blueprint for fighting the virus nationally.
Chandigarh Elections
AAP fought the Chandigarh corporation election for the 1st time & defeated stalwarts. The sitting mayor lost his seat to AAP.
AAP won 14 seats out of 35, becoming the single largest party in the council.
Historic victory in Punjab
In Punjab, AAP celebrated a landslide victory with Bhagwant Mann becoming Chief Minister, securing an impressive 42.01% vote share and winning 92 out of 117 seats.
Our momentum continued as AAP made significant strides in the Gujarat election by securing 5 seats, and 12.92% of the votes.
Meanwhile, AAP gained 2 seats in Goa and 6.77% of the total vote share.
The country saw unprecedented results with incumbent & former CM defeated by AAP’s young and dynamic candidates in Punjab & Goa.
A National Party and Mayor in Delhi
In 2023, AAP was officially granted the status of a National Party by the Election Commission on April 10. This recognition was a testament to the party’s widespread support.
In Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll, AAP recorded a landslide victory by winning with a margin of 58,691 votes.
In Delhi, AAP defeated BJP and ended BJP’s 15 year rule over Delhi’s MCD. Shelly Oberoi was elected as mayor and Aaley Mohammad Iqbal as Deputy Mayor with the support of 134 elected councillors in MCD.
Strengthening Democracy
In the 2024 Chandigarh Mayoral elections, AAP exposed the wrongdoings of the presiding officer and won the election, marking a decisive victory for AAP and democracy.
In the General elections for the 18th Lok Sabha, we contested 13 seats independently in Punjab and 9 seats as part of the INDIA block in the states of Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, and Assam.
AAP strengthened its presence in Indian politics by winning 3 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state of Punjab.
