Lydia’s light shone brightly in everything she did at the museum. She was a joyful presence who loved welcoming students, visitors, and community members, always eager to share the rich Quaker history of Sandy Spring. Her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering dedication helped shape the experience of countless guests, and her contributions strengthened the very heart of our mission.
Lydia will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her legacy lives on in the stories she preserved, the people she touched, and the community she lovingly served.
Lydia, thank you for lifting up the voices and history of Sandy Spring. We are forever grateful.

The Walk to Freedom is a commemorative and educational event that honors the legacy of the Underground Railroad and the ongoing pursuit of freedom, justice, and self-determination.
It marks the anniversary of Anthony Cohen’s historic 1996 walk from the Sandy Spring Slave Museum to Canada, symbolically retracing the path taken by freedom seekers who escaped slavery through the Underground Railroad. The walk serves as both a remembrance of the courage and resilience of those who sought freedom and a living tribute to Maryland’s role as a critical border state in that journey.

Black History can never be erased!
There is no American history without the genius, creativity, perseverance, skills, and work ethic of Black Americans. From the nation's foundations to its cultural, scientific, and economic advancements, Black Americans have been central to shaping the country's identity. Black labor built industries, their innovations revolutionized science and technology, and their artistry defined global culture. Despite centuries of oppression, their resilience has fueled movements for justice and equality, pushing the nation toward its highest ideals. To erase or diminish the contributions of Blacks is to deny the very essence of America’s story.

The Sandy Spring Slave Museum & African Art Gallery, Inc., was established to focus on the heritage of Blacks from their origins through the Middle Passage, the salvation the Underground Railroad provided, the struggle for civil rights, and their accomplishments in the United States and African Diaspora; bridge the information gap and inform all ethnic groups about the advantages of cross-cultural communication and diversity, as expressed through history, the arts and the humanities.
We welcome you to join us on our journey to facilitate the building of bridges (safe spaces for dialogue) to help consolidate a common front for overcoming centuries of systemic, dehumanizing racism a menace eating at the heart of humanity.

What are people saying about the museum?
“My family and I had a wonderful experience at the museum all the staff was very welcoming and friendly I definitely will be returning and recommending to my homeschool group. Our visit was today 1/14 11am-1pm they even gave books and snacks at the end of the tour. I also plan to make regular donations to the museum to keep my ancestors history alive and NEVER FORGOTTEN.”
“An impressive, small museum, with highly knowledgeable staff to help you learn about the rich history in that area. We further learned more during lectures provided by board members and others from UMD invited to speak.”
“I 💗 love this museum. There is so much history from Africa, to local Sandy Spring Family Trees, Genealogy, Ancestry and Underground Railroad history. I attended the Harriet Tubman Day presentation by NPS Ranger Angela Crenshaw from the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Park Visitor Center. She did a screening of the film "Visions of Freedom" and then a Q and A about the film. This museum is a must visit.”
“This is a five-star field trip.”
