A LEGACY OF CARE
Antara Psychiatric Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre, Kolkata.
Driven by the acute need for providing treatment and rehabilitation to the destitute and very poor suffering from mental disorders including drug addiction and alcoholism , Antara Psychiatric Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre was founded in Kolkata in 1971 by Mother Teresa, Mr. P. M. John and Dr. Satrujit Dasgupta.
Antara is a non-governmental, non-profit, secular, and apolitical organization committed to providing comprehensive care for individuals battling mental illness, addiction, and alcohol dependence. For over five decades, Antara has served people across all economic strata, with a strong focus on aiding the most vulnerable, including the destitute, homeless, and neglected.
Antara offers a wide array of services, including outpatient, inpatient, and community-based mental health care. Additionally, the organization conducts awareness programs, school mental health initiatives, referral and detection camps, training sessions, and outreach activities to foster a deeper understanding of mental health issues.
Located on a tranquil 7-acre campus in Antaragram, Kolkata, Antara operates a 200-bed psychiatric hospital. This facility provides specialized services such as acute and sub-acute care, addiction treatment, day therapy, family therapy, and rehabilitation for individuals of all ages. Recreational, vocational, and aesthetic therapy programs are also integrated to support holistic recovery. Notably, Antara extends free care and shelter to deserving homeless individuals with mental illnesses.
To address gaps in mental health accessibility, Antara runs seven satellite clinics in remote regions, ensuring that underserved populations receive the support they need. Every year, hundreds of individuals and families turn to Antara for affordable, high-quality mental health care, making it a cornerstone of hope and recovery in the community.
