The basic reason for this wave of protests is the fact that consumer prices have risen much faster than workers’ wages in recent years. Moreover, workers in many industries are being made to work longer than 8 hours a day. More and more workers are being hired on temporary contracts and denied their basic rights and any kind of job security. The recent shortage of cooking gas, and the massive increase in cost of cooking gas resulting from the war in West Asia, has acted as the tipping point.

The Indian working class is told FTAs are good for them as more jobs will be created to increase exports. What they are not told is how export driven production leads to lowering of wages and worsening of working conditions. They are also not told that higher imports will lead to the closure of many small and medium enterprises who will not be able to compete with imported goods. This will result in many workers losing their jobs.
