Historical Background
The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) started as a Leprosarium in 1918 (Over 100 years now). It evolved into a General Hospital and then Specialist Hospital in 1978.
The ATBUTH Bauchi came into being in 2010 after the takeover of the former Specialist Hospital Bauchi by the Federal Government of Nigeria. It became the eighteenth teaching hospital of the federal government, and the hospital remains the major health facility in the state and also serves patients from the neighbouring states of Plateau, Gombe, Taraba, Yobe, Jigawa, Borno, Kano and Adamawa state.
The hospital is the second teaching hospital in the North-East geo-political zone, which has the population of about 40 million people. Similarly, the hospital has developed over the years into a centre of excellence in several specialties such as endourology, air ways management, interventional management among others.
The hospital has over 700 bed capacity, serving as referral centre for the state.
