I get asked all the time as the graduate
0:08
director, what's the difference between
0:11
studying nonprofit management and
0:12
studying philanthropy?
0:14
If you study nonprofit management,
0:17
you're really looking at the inner
0:19
workings of an organization or a group
0:22
of organizations. And in our school, we
0:26
think about the role of the individual
0:28
and why nonprofit organizations form in
0:32
the first place. And there are all sorts
0:35
of reasons. So we know that the the
0:39
nature to be generous to each other um
0:43
especially somebody who could use a
0:46
hand, right? Um comes naturally. So
0:50
studying philanthropy means we're
0:53
studying how why across time and place
0:59
how people are how learn to be generous
1:02
and how they practice that in their
1:04
daily life. So, a a master's degree
1:10
can augment people's thinking and
1:15
how they want to be intentional about
1:17
their philanthropy in all aspects of
1:21
throughout their life. And I think one
1:23
of the common threads among students and
1:26
even staff and faculty is that everyone
1:30
who's connected with the school in some
1:32
way wants to be part of something bigger
1:35
than themselves. And instead of looking
1:39
for a degree, a course of study that
1:43
will
1:45
improve your own situation in life.
1:49
People who come here certainly want to
1:52
do that. People are want to advance
1:53
their career um and advance their
1:55
skills, advance their reputation, of
1:58
course, but they're also advancing
2:01
something bigger that they want to be a
2:02
part of. So people here who uh care
2:06
about the environment and they're
2:07
looking for ways to mobilize people in a
2:11
unique in a unique way through
2:13
philanthropy. I always ask people when
2:16
they call me uh when we meet people at
2:19
orientation when they apply how did you
2:21
find the school? Why did you choose the
2:23
school? And the overwhelming number one
2:27
reason say they're coming here is a
2:31
mentor, a peer, someone that they
2:35
respect, someone who's in the field has
2:38
suggested this is the place you want to
2:40
be. The critical thinking about this
2:44
universal yet mysterious phenomenon of
2:49
generosity
2:50
um can take you any direction in the
2:54
world that you want to go. And that's
2:56
that that makes this a special place.

The Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy hosted its annual
Pitch Your Passion
competition in February, awarding more than $94,608 in scholarships to 12 students.
Description of the video:
Today was Pitch Your Passion, which is a
0:04
scholarship competition for like-minded
0:07
individuals who care about the community
0:08
in similar ways to compete for the
0:11
opportunity to come to the Lily Family
0:13
School philanthropy and gain experience
0:16
together. High school students or
0:18
college students with under 60 credits
0:20
are eligible to participate. They talk
0:22
about a problem that they're passionate
0:24
on and they propose a solution and the
0:26
winners of the competition get awarded
0:29
full ride scholarships and then there
0:30
are a few partial scholarships as well.
0:33
And they have the individual interviews
0:34
with our team to determine what's their
0:38
interest as it relates to the field.
0:40
What is it that they want to do with
0:41
their career once they've finished their
0:44
undergraduate studies? And then a group
0:46
presentation of a topic as it relates to
0:49
philanthropy.
0:51
I think where this program and this
0:53
school really sets itself apart and and
0:55
helps students is how do we become
0:58
leaders in this field? How do we deal
1:00
with the interpersonal connections that
1:02
are so important as it relates to the
1:05
philanthropic sector?
1:09
So we started off with choosing a topic
1:11
that we were interested in with a
1:12
partner. We brainstormed for a while,
1:15
did some research and put together a
1:16
slideshow and presentation on a topic
1:18
that was important to us. Presented it
1:20
to everyone. We talked about health
1:22
inequities and how health literacy is an
1:25
issue that we face in our country today
1:27
and especially in marginalized
1:28
communities and how important it is for
1:31
marginalized communities to have access
1:32
to health literacy in order to
1:34
understand diagnosis or different things
1:37
that are going on in their health and in
1:39
their family's health.
1:41
I was awarded a full tuition scholarship
1:44
to be able to come to the school and
1:47
have my toolkit and grow in my education
1:51
with philanthropy and the ways in which
1:52
I can serve my community. Thank you to
1:55
the Thomasson scholarship and the
1:56
Thomasson family. Now I'm able to create
1:59
that toolkit and be able to serve
2:01
different kinds of communities out in
2:03
Indiana. Thank you so much for this
2:05
incredible opportunity. It's genuinely
2:07
life-changing and I hope that I can help
2:10
contribute to a positive change in
2:12
society because of this.
