Graylands Hospital
We provide a comprehensive range of public mental health services for all ages through community mental health services and hospitals.
Graylands Hospital
Graylands Hospital is the state’s only public psychiatric teaching hospital, delivering mental health acute care and rehabilitation services for adults. The hospital is an authorised inpatient mental health tertiary hospital with 109 beds, consisting of 51 acute beds and 58 hospital extended stay beds.
Graylands Hospital provides services for people aged 18 to 65 years with a mental illness. The hospital provides voluntary and involuntary short-term inpatient management during an acute phase of mental illness until the person is able to be treated effectively in a community-based setting. Inpatient care is also provided for patients who have long-term mental illness under the Hospital Extended Care Service (HECS).
The two distinct care pathways are integrated with community mental health services to allow people to receive the level of treatment they require for their illness at any given time. Mental health services are person-centred, focusing on evidence-based treatment that is culturally and spiritually sensitive to individual needs.

Hospital Extended Care Service (HECS)

Forensic Mental Health Services
Co-located on the Graylands Hospital site is the
State Forensic Mental Health Service
, which includes the Frankland Centre, an inpatient facility for people with mental illness within the state’s judicial system.
Graylands Reconfiguration and Forensic Project
The
Graylands Reconfiguration and Forensic Taskforce (external site)
was established by the State Government in 2020 to oversee the development of modern, purpose-built mental health services in Western Australia – some of which will continue to be based at Graylands Hospital.
The taskforce’s work complements the
WA Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drug Services Plan 2015-2025 (external site)
, which highlights the need for contemporary models of care with a focus on rebalancing mental health services across the community.
In April 2023, the
State Government announced
$218.9 million
(external site)
for the first stage of works, which will enable construction of a further 53 forensic mental health beds to be built on the northern portion of the Graylands Hospital site, including a five-bed children and adolescent unit.
A business case for these works is now being developed by the Department of Health in collaboration with the Mental Health Commission and relevant health agencies, including the North Metropolitan Health Service.
