Research for the Future of Health
The future of health asks for innovation to help understand why some fall ill and others do not. For the development of innovative diagnostics, treatments and sustainable health systems.

Our key areas of research
The UMCG key areas showcase the power of our combined interests. They show the diversity of our research, our innovative power and what we a can achieve through our shared effort.
Transplantation
Transplantation is a lifesaving therapy for patients suffering from end stage organ failure. We combine knowledge and care on transplantations to provide a "second life" to patients and organs.
Innovative cancer treatment
Early detection of tumor cells. Frontier and efficient therapies, addressing critical side effects. Some of our research topics that help push borders for our patients.
Public Health
Together with a large network of partners, we do research e.g. on lifestyle or social environment, to reduce health inequality and promote a sustainable health system.
Health data
Health data could be a gamechanger in health research. By studying large data sets from healthy populations or of specific patient groups we can develop new solutions for prevention, diagnostics or treatment.
Biology of ageing
Ageing to most is simply something that happens to us. True? We need to look deeply into the mechanisms that result in ageing to prevent and combat age-related disease.
Microbiome
The human microbiome is a vital contributor to human health. To connect the dots between microbiome and disease, we need to be as versatile as the microbiome itself.
