Our Mission
Carroll School empowers children with language-based learning differences, such as dyslexia, to become academically skilled students who are strong self-advocates and confident lifelong learners. Carroll is an inclusive community committed to embracing diverse strengths, identities, and lived experiences in order to give each child what they most need to thrive.
… A school where my teachers know me as a learner.
Our educators are superlatively well trained in research-backed approaches and empowered to customize instruction—to ensure every Carroll student succeeds. There is great intentionality in how we think about and use data.
Before meeting a child, our educators dig in—evaluations, reports, IEPs, parent statements, child’s interests, etc.—to gain a deep understanding of the child. In every lesson, our expert educators collect feedback and data that inform the next lesson plan. We circle back and teach and reteach until mastery is achieved. We are thoughtful and deliberate, practicing our craft with incredible rigor and patience.
No student is pulled out, and no student is left behind.
… A school where I am part of something bigger than myself.
Rooted in our unwavering commitment to research and science, we teach to the transformative power of human brains. We know that with evidence-based instruction and targeted cognitive interventions, we can rewire brains in remarkable ways.
To bring our knowledge outside of Carroll and advance the field of education for learners with language-based learning differences, we are steadfastly committed to nurturing our strong partnerships with fellow educators and researchers. Through this, we aim to advance the science of highly effective education.
… A school where I am taught the way I learn.
We are intensely focused on each student. We use exhaustive data to create a highly individualized learning experience for each student. We customize schedules and curricula to ensure we give each student what they need most. Daily schedules include a Focus Area and Flex blocks that deliver a double dose of instruction in a student’s areas of greatest need.
The Carroll experience also includes a whole child perspective. We can only achieve our mission when our lens accounts for cultural factors in addition to cognitive and academic skillset. Our student profile is narrowly defined, but our students’ lived experiences are not.
… A school where I can confidently be myself.
We create a learning environment where students are seen fully and have a deep sense of community and belonging. Carroll educators work to build trusting relationships with students to foster academic risk taking and openness. In the classroom, mistakes are celebrated, questions are encouraged, and asking for help is essential. At Carroll, we teach students to be hand raisers, to persevere, and to self advocate with confidence.
Let's take a look.
Our Approach
Carroll is fiercely dedicated to giving each child what they most need to succeed. How? We study the data and customize instruction according to each student's strengths and weaknesses; we group like learners to deliver highly effective, targeted instruction; we pace instruction to ensure mastery; we design curricula that’s both interesting and intellectually challenging.

Small Classes
Small class sizes enable educators to customize instruction so each student can improve their decoding, reading fluency, comprehension, written expression, spelling, mathematics (conceptual and problem solving), scientific thinking, content analysis, and more.
Learn More
Whole Child
Carroll is a school where embracing learning differences is normalized and celebrated. This creates an ideal environment for children to appreciate their strengths and improve in areas of vulnerability. Our focus extends beyond academics to address low self-esteem, reduced frustration tolerance, and anxiety.

Cognitive Intervention
Science has proven that human brains grow and change in response to effective academic instruction and targeted cognitive interventions. That's why we developed Targeted Cognitive Intervention (TCI). TCI addresses the underlying causes of a child’s specific cognitive weaknesses, such as processing speed, executive function, and working memory. This intervention strengthens brain circuits that promote effective and efficient learning. We liken it to building superhighways of learning in the brain.

Dyslexic Advantage
We built an entire education around honoring and developing curiosity, passion, and talent. Our Multis program opens the doors for students to discover and embrace their dyslexic strengths through science, engineering, art, music, outdoor education, cultural and social experiences, community service, and more.

Family Partnerships
Family partnerships are essential in optimizing the Carroll experience for our students. The collaboration between educators and families creates a powerful synergy that strengthens the bond between home and school and contributes to students’ success.

Research & Partnerships
We are committed to furthering the science of education within the field of language-based learning differences. As such, we partner and collaborate closely with outside educators and researchers to advance collective knowledge around best practices and highly effective instruction.
Learn More
Our Multis and enrichment programs allow students to be expansive, unconstrained, and creative. The trust and confidence that were once lost are found again.
