History of St. Dominic Hospital
As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give. Matt. 10:7, 8
In 1960, The Local Authorities from Akwatia approached the Bishop of Accra with request that the Catholic Mission should take over the newly built Clinic in Akwatia. The Chief of Akwatia then was Barima Kofi Bempong II. Bishop Bowers, the then Bishop of the Accra Diocese, in turn asked the Superior General of the Dominican Sisters, Rev. Sr. Fabiola Quack for help which was generously granted.

HEALTH INFORMATION UNIT
According to Peter Drucker (1999-2005) who is often referred to as ‘’father of modern management’’, whatever is to be improved, must be measured. Data is very vital in every institution, be it health, business, agriculture etc. It is important in identifying key priority areas, plan interventions and evaluate performance. Data from the Health Information Unit have been pivotal to the development of the facility over the years, as it has been used in areas of research, staff recruitment, financial control and even infrastructural development.
Overall, the unit performs its tasks in four levels, namely:
1. Data generation and collection (including designing data collection tools)
2. Data management (processing and storage)
3. Data analysis (interpreting data into consumable information)
4. Information dissemination, feedback and reporting.
Data Generation and Collection
Data is generated all across the facility, both at the clinical end and non-clinical, as well as both digitally and manually. These include tallying of vaccines at the Child Welfare Clinic, recording of deliveries from the delivery book, recording of Antenatal Care (ANC) registrants and attendants onto the Form A and certification of deaths into the Cause of Death (CoD) books at various wards.
Data Management
This is where data collection tools are designed both manually and digitally to capture data from various units and for storage. These tools are designed in conformity to the data elements required by Ministry of Health (MOH), Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) and Catholic Health Service Trust (CHST). Data collated are then analysed.
Data Analysis
Data is meaningless until analyzed and further interpreted into consumable information. The unit in achieving this, applies various forms of data analysis tools such as Excel and STATA, and by carefully examining the raw data. By establishing trends and inference, the analyzed raw data now becomes important information relevant to the running of the institution.
Information Dissemination, Feedback and Reporting
The unit operates strictly based on the rules enshrined in the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843) of Ghana. Again, all data generated and collected by the unit are done based on the standardized data sets and data collection tools/templates, rolled out and used per Ministry of Health as the head body, in conjunction with the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) and Catholic Health Trust (CHST). Whiles reports are written and submitted to the Hospital Management for decision making, feedback reports are given to various units as review for their performance within the stipulated period.
