As a rural state, South Dakota has unique health care needs. The USD Sanford School of Medicine is committed to providing quality care and establishing strong partnerships across the state including in underserved communities. Our faculty, staff and students are actively expanding access to care, gaining specialized training and growing South Dakota’s health care workforce. By summer of 2028, the Sanford School of Medicine will move the first 18 months of its M.D. program and its medical student support services to Sioux Falls. This change serves as an opportunity to enhance students' educational experiences, strengthen collaboration with the state's health care systems, expand research and better serve communities across the state.

We have long been recognized for excellence in rural medical education. Our Frontier And Rural Medicine (FARM) program is a unique opportunity for selecting Pillar 2 students to receive eleven months of clinical training in rural communities with the goal to increase the number of primary care physicians who practice in rural South Dakota areas.
