Emerson’s Band & Orchestra “Survivor” delivered another unforgettable experience—equal parts competition, teamwork, and music-making. In their Survivor teams, students learned in small groups led by expert musicians, including University of Michigan students and Emerson alumni.
From intense musical challenges to unforgettable team-building games—like blindfolded taste tests and Human Hungry Hippo—the energy never let up. The event wrapped with a celebration of student achievement, recognizing musicians for their dedication through Tri-M, MSBOA All-States, DSO Honor Days, and beyond.

This rich, cross-curricular project invites students to explore the many facets of our home state through a blend of research, creativity, and hands-on learning.
From the rhythms of Motown to the legacy of the lumber industry, from iconic bridges and lighthouses to Michigan’s diverse wildlife and natural resources, students engage deeply with topics that shape our region`s identity. Along the way, they build critical-thinking skills, collaborate across disciplines, and develop a lasting appreciation for the place they call home—an experience that remains a hallmark of the Emerson 3rd grade journey.
