BREAKING: FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SLASHES JAMB AND NECO FEES
The Federal Government on Wednesday announced drastic reduction in the cost of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB and National Examination Council, NECO, registration and examination fees.
Applicants under the new arrangement will pay N3,500 as JAMB examination fees against the previous fees N5,000, N9,850 for Senior Secondary Certificate examination SSCE, which is handled by NECO from the current N11,350 being paid and N4,000 instead of N5,500 for Basic Education Certificate which is also handled by NECO.
The new reductions were announced by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu while briefing State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting presided over by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
FEC also approved N14.7 billion, to be funded by the contractor, for new Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, travel certificates.
The new certificate will now carry security features like the picture and fingerprints of the holder. The Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Danbazzau said the current certificate has no security features and could be easily forged by anybody. Noting that the new project is for the security of the Nigerian borders, he said that the agreement for the contract would be signed at a later date. He said that the contract is for ten years and that 13 million cards will be produced within the period.
The Minister of State for Power, Works and Housing, Suleiman Hassan said that N3.4 billion was approved for furnishing of three Federal Secretariat complex in Anambra, Zamfara and Bayelsa states and N331. 2 billion for rehabilitation of some bridges in the north east.

JAMB speaks on exam malpractices recorded in 2018 UTME
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disclosed that it recorded an appreciable drop in the number of exam malpractices in the conduct of the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Compared to 2017 with 2, 508 exam malpractice cases, the Board said it recorded 280 cases in 2018 UTME, indicating a percentage difference of -88.84 per cent.
It also vowed to work assiduously with all stakeholders to ensure continuous drop in the cases of exam malpractices, to, perhaps, boost the credibility of the exam system.
Its Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, had announced, shortly before the commencement of the 2018 UTME that the Board had reviewed previous exercises and had strongly blocked several identified and new possible avenues through which candidates could cheat.
However, a document from JAMB indicated that 37, 516 candidates that successfully registered for the 2018 UTME were recorded absent for an unexplained reason. This was against 30, 006 candidates that were recorded absent in 2017.
Similarly, the Board said it recorded 19.32 per cent increase in the number of visually impaired candidates that registered for the 2018 UTME as against 2017 exercise.
It revealed that 315 visually impaired candidates participated in 2018 UTME as against 264 candidates that registered for the 2017 exercise.
It, however, thanked the Federal College of Education (FCE) (Special), Oyo, University of Lagos (UniLag) and the University of Jos (UniJos) for giving reasonable opportunity to visually impaired candidates in the 2017 admission year.
It disclosed that FCE (Special), Oyo, admitted 31 candidates in the 2017 admission year, while UniLag and UniJos admitted 30 and 20 candidates respectively, in the 2017 admission year.
