Liberal Party NEC Emergency Statement – Government Proposals for a Digital ID
The Liberal Party rejects the government’s plan to promote a form of digital ID to access services and tackle illegal immigration.
The party believes any such project will only add to the public debt. No large-scale government IT programme has been cost effective or delivered on time and within budget.
We believe that this would be one more step towards a dystopian future for our children and is totally against freedom for the individual with minimum interference from the state. It is against everything we stand for as liberals.
Whilst we accept digital documents can aid in access to services such as NHS records, DVLA, and passport services, they should never be used as a surrogate ID card.
Checks for migrant workers already exist while UK nationals must show their 'passport/birth certificate’ when apply for accommodation or employment.
It is also notably unclear to what extent law enforcement agencies would be entitled to demand access to a digital ID to verify identification.
Liberal Party NEC Statement – Syrian Community Stability and Sectarian Violence
Following earlier attacks this year on Alawite, Druze and Christian communities in Syria the Liberal Party deplore the recent overnight attacks on the Kurdish community in Aleppo. These attacks include the use of tanks and the military shelling civilian areas.
We call for the UN to take meaningful action to protect the various minorities in the region following the earlier fall of the Syrian regime and we support greater autonomy for the Kurds in the North East, Alawites in the Northwest and Druze in the South East.
The party is concerned that plans for an inclusive government have failed to materialise with just 2 Christian members being appointed to the reformed 119 seat People’s Assembly and stalled attempts to integrate all armed factions in the Syrian military.
We urge the UK government to suspend any financial support for the Syrian regime.

The Liberal Party views the impending local government reorganisations, outlined by the government in their white paper English Devolution released on the 16th of December 2024, with considerable disquiet.
The Government’s proposed reform of local government ls talking about devolving powers whilst proposing a massive centralisation of powers away from local communities.
