Now Open! Try These New Museum Experiences!
The new gallery spaces ask visitors to consider What is Kansas? What was Kansas? and Why Kansas? Kansas has tornadoes, sunflowers, is the Free State, the Wheat State, and is known for the
Wizard of Oz
. But there is so much more. The stories of everyday people accomplishing incredible things, the heartland, a crossroads, a place of innovation, and a celebration of numerous cultures and traditions.
Bleeding Kansas tells the story of the turbulent territorial era, how Kansas became a state, and Kansans’ role in the Civil War. Making Kansas is rooted in the land and resources from the earth. Connecting Kansas is centered on the 1880 AT&SF steam locomotive and the impact of the railroad. Changing Kansas shares stories of people pushing to make their society a better place. Interactive elements throughout the gallery enable exploration of these stories in more depth, bringing artifacts to life, and connecting visitors to the past.
The newly updated lobby welcomes visitors with a 1946 Kansas-made Funk airplane suspended overhead. Children will enjoy playing on the popular child-sized train, with a new seating area for adults nearby. The snack area offers seating at the vintage 1950s diner counter. The new Museum Store carries Kansas-made treasures. The education classroom will soon host fun and innovative ways for students to learn about Kansas history.
