Tools and Instruments
Many clockmakers of the 18 and 19 centuries were avid inventors ahead of their times, holding numerous patents. In addition to timekeeping, clockmakers were responsible for early mechanical devices in wide variety of applications, from household items like roasting Clock Jacks to precise marine barometers, built to withstand extreme weather conditions at sea. They also had a sophisticated array of instruments for their own craft, clockmaking, including engines and tools. Below are some of the examples from the Willard’s clock shop and house, mostly belonging to several generations of the Willard family.
