Students, staff, and alumni attended the
Death of a Salesman
production currently playing on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre! The English Seminar 11 class had just read the play and was mid-discussion, so was an exciting time to actually see it performed. Described by drama critic John Lahr as "probably the most successful modern play ever published," the iconic Arthur Miller tragedy moved all its viewers, who were impressed by the current production’s impeccable acting and innovative staging. The new production did away with playwright Arthur Miller's suggested staging altogether, setting the play inside what appeared to be a large, empty garage, populated by an old red Chevy. This space was, however, used to imagine all the other settings—the Loman kitchen and bedrooms, Howard's office, the restaurant, the backyard, and even the hotel room that Willy remembers visiting in Boston. The students were raptly attentive to the play and eager to discuss it afterwards. They said that seeing the performance made much more clear which people were actually present and which events were currently taking place as opposed to what was happening in Willy's head only. They also enjoyed debating whether they agreed or disagreed about the interpretations of certain lines, and regardless of which side of the debate they were on, they all found it illuminating to see it live.
