Exams, ATARs and uni - Year 12 is full of big moments, but applying to RMIT is simpler than you might think. Here's how it's done through VTAC...
Once you've found the perfect certificate, diploma or degree at RMIT – or even a shortlist of your top choices – go ahead and check the entry requirements. Most degrees will include an ATAR and subject prerequisites, and some courses even include selection tasks, like folios.
If you don't meet an entry requirement, you can always apply for an RMIT pathways option which begins your university journey in a vocational course then progresses you to a degree. While pathways are an excellent way to gain access to a certain course, they are also a great option if you’re interested in picking up multiple qualifications during your study.
Next, you’ll need to log in to the VTAC website and add your preferences, we recommending doing this in September to avoid VTAC’s late fees. Think of your preferences as a wish list of courses that you’d like to study after high school. You list them from highest to lowest, so your favourite course should be your first preference.
In December, after your final exams, you’ll receive your ATAR. For the next few days after you get these results, you can change or reorder your preferences based on the ATAR you received.
In late December, university offers are sent out to students based on their preferences. If you don’t receive an offer in this round, that’s not the end. There are more chances to change your preferences between the other offer rounds in January and into February.
Once your offer has arrived, you will need to accept it by enrolling.
If you need assistance or advice at any point, contact our friendly staff at Study@RMIT. They can help you with course details, tell you about pathway programs and discuss your options if you don’t meet the entry requirements for a course.
Once you’re here at RMIT, your university journey begins.

Ready to kickstart your career, upskill for your next role or expand your expertise? The first step in this process is submitting your application to RMIT.
Applying direct doesn’t have to be hard, in fact we’re here to show you just how easy it can be.
Once you’ve found the course that’s perfect for you, check that you are eligible to apply direct and that you meet the entry requirements. Depending on what you want to study, these could include education or experience requirements, like your academic records or your CV. Depending on the course there might be some extra documents or selection tasks.
To submit your application, click the ‘Apply’ button on your course’s webpage and follow the prompts.
After applying you can relax, knowing that we’re assessing your application and if you’re successful, you’ll receive a full offer. Assessing an application can take anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks, so don’t worry if you don’t hear back from us right away.
If you’ve got questions about applying or just need advice, our friendly staff at Study@RMIT have your back.  They can answer all your big questions and help you understand your options. All you need to do is reach out.
Once your full offer has arrived, you’ll need to accept it and enrol to secure a place in your course. If you’ve studied a similar course before or have relevant experience, you may be eligible for study credit - which means that your experience can help you complete your studies sooner. You’ll want to apply for this credit as soon as you accept your offer to study at RMIT.
Once you’re here at RMIT, your university journey begins.
