Upcoming Changes to Course Numbers and Prefixes Beginning Fall 2026
As part of a statewide initiative led by the Arkansas Department of Higher Education,
Arkansas State University–Newport will implement updates to its course numbering system
starting in Fall 2026. These updates are designed to make transferring credits between
Arkansas colleges and universities simpler and more seamless for students.
What’s Changing?
Course numbers will expand from four digits to five digits.
Example: ENGL1003 will become ENGL10103
Some academic departments will adopt new four-letter prefixes
to align with the state’s standardized system.
Example: Psychology will change from PSY to PSYC
What’s Staying the Same?
Your credit hours
Your degree plan
Your graduation requirements
These changes are purely cosmetic—course content, credits, and requirements will remain
exactly as they are. Only the course numbers and some prefixes will appear different.
When Will the Changes Take Effect?
You’ll begin to see these updates reflected in systems like Banner and DegreeWorks
in advance of Fall 2026 registration. All Fall 2026 courses will be listed using the
new numbering format and prefixes.
