Substance Misuse Coalitions and other prevention partners across Vermont aim to reduce underage drinking, binge drinking, prescription drug misuse, and cannabis use in Vermonters age 12-25. Coalitions use evidence-based/evidence-informed and/or promising practices and the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) process and model in this work.
Local Highlights
GPA brings together many community partners (such as Gifford Medical Center in Randolph, Little Rivers Health Center in Bradford) to identify community needs and reduce substance misuse and abuse among youth and young adults across the district.
Prevention efforts have led to policy changes in several Northern Windsor and Southern Orange County towns limiting substance use in public spaces. It also has funded middle and high school groups to attend the Getting to Y training, increasing school commitment to reducing substance misuse and abuse. Community partners have distributed prescription drug mail-back envelopes and displays throughout the district, as well as assist to make Drug Take Back Day successful. To meet the need for accurate information about marijuana, efforts include sponsoring expert speakers and disseminating information.
