What We Do
The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) serves as the legal custodian of Ghana’s material cultural heritage, safeguarding the nation’s invaluable legacy of history, art, and architecture. Established in 1957, GMMB is entrusted with preserving both movable and immovable cultural assets, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the historic Forts and Castles, Asante Traditional Buildings, and significant archaeological discoveries.
With a mission to acquire, protect, conserve, and document Ghana’s cultural heritage, GMMB is committed to fostering research, education, and public engagement. We oversee the establishment and management of museums, regulate the export and trade of antiquities, maintain a comprehensive national inventory of cultural assets, and promote awareness through innovative exhibitions and interpretive programs. GMMB stands as a pillar in preserving Ghana’s heritage for future generations, ensuring its history and identity endure.
