Technology and STEAM
STEAM integrates the classic sciences of biology, chemistry and physics with the applied sciences of technology and engineering using the languages of art and mathematics. Reflecting real life, STEAM doesn’t segment knowledge into disciplines—it invites students to bring everything they know to bear on a project.
One of our greatest strengths is our ability to anticipate what students need to be successful - and to adapt quickly to meet those needs. Through innovation and individual focus, learning feels challenging and satisfying.
At SRDS, we include state-of-the-art technology in the classroom for the sole purpose of supporting academic excellence. Student outcomes and experiences are at the core of our decisions regarding technology resources and implementing new software and hardware. Prior to integrating new technology in Pre-K-Grade 12 curricula, we ask the questions, "How does this help our students learn?" How can we best prepare them for the changing technology landscape?"
Projections integrate many curricular areas, professions and technologies, and allow for authentic work and assessment that extends beyond school walls. As students engage in research and design and receive feedback from professionals, they develop creative, collaborative, communication and critical thinking skills. They are empowered with a thorough understanding of how to use technology most effectively to achieve their goals.

cience Lab, students have access to 3-D printers, a 3-D scanner, circuits kits, Little Bits, electronic kits, Makey Makey boards, Arduino and Lilypad boards, sewing machines, LEDs, Capacitors, Conductive Thread and robotics kits. They use these materials and more to brainstorm and create models, prototypes, wearable tech, and more for school projects. Because of the trust that exists between students and teachers, as well as the philosophy of access held by our Technology Department, students are also able to use the Ideas Lab for their own projects unrelated to school work.
Students in the Lower School learn the fundamentals of internet coding by playing a hands-on game in the IDEAS lab. The game involves shape and sequence creation with "Bee-Bots," toy robots which introduce basic programming concepts to students in a fun, interactive way. Lower School students also learn to work with devices at an early age. SRDS utilizes a 1:1 Chromebook program in Grades 3-5 and iPads in Pre-K-Grade 5. They also have Lego robotics kits, Oxobots and Osmo systems to integrate with various lessons.
Our modern computer graphics lab features iMacs running Adobe Creative Suite applications, offers large-format color printing and scanning capabilities, and provides students with cutting-edge interactive tablets.
We boast one of the most in-depth Digital Arts programs in the region, offering graphic arts to students beginning in grade 4. The program includes courses for Upper Level Graphic Arts I, II, III and IV as students become more proficient in their skills and require further challenge.
Our program has gained national recognition for the innovative way it teaches students to powerfully present a clear visual message. It is a perfect example of our integrated approach to teaching and the power of interdisciplinary study.
REBEL VISION Production Studio, where students produce a live weekly newscast and talk shows, broadcasts via Livestream on the SRDS channel. Students use a Tricaster multicamera, multiformat switcher system to produce programs with multiple studio cameras, live graphics, chroma-key virtual sets and pre-produced video packages. Resources for use in student projects include a green screen for chroma-key overlay, professional HD video cameras, digital cameras, GoPro cameras, compact FlipCams, tripods, lights and microphones.
Aligning with the Saddle River Day School’s mission to encourage students to be “intellectual risk takers” and “caring and ethical contributors to society," the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, works to enhance our academic environment with meaningful projects and programs that encourage students to examine issues in the community and the world, and to see these issues as opportunities for innovation, design and entrepreneurship. It allows for more project based, student centered learning and cross-divisional collaboration in the classroom. It enhances popular applied learning courses and programs already in place such as Engineering and Design, Graphic Design, Entrepreneurship, Robotics, Digital Citizenship, Literacy and Fluency, and creates new programs and curriculum that help prepare students to succeed and thrive in life.
