The Legal Unit is a division of the Registry Department at the University and is accountable to the Registrar, who leads the department. Since its establishment, the University has engaged a private legal practitioner to manage its daily litigation in court. However, the legal personnel within the Unit are responsible for overseeing and managing these in-house legal matters. The Unit is responsible for managing all legal matters for the University and coordinating with external solicitors. Key duties include drafting legal documents, providing daily legal advice, serving as a member or secretary of various ad-hoc committees, overseeing university-owned companies, and performing any additional legal functions assigned by the Vice-Chancellor or other university divisions.
The Legal Unit serves several key responsibilities within the university. It acts as a legal advisor to university leadership and departments, providing guidance on compliance, risk management, and governance issues. The unit is tasked with reviewing and approving university policies to ensure they are in line with local, state, and federal laws. Additionally, it manages contracts by drafting, reviewing, and negotiating agreements to protect the university’s interests. The unit also monitors compliance with relevant laws and regulations, implementing necessary changes as needed. Furthermore, it prepares reports on legal matters, risks, and compliance issues for university leadership and governing bodies.
In addition to its administrative responsibilities, the Unit performs the following key functions:
Provide expert legal advice to university administration, faculty, and staff on a range of issues including contracts, employment, student affairs, intellectual property, and compliance matters.
Policy Development: Assist in the development and revision of university policies to ensure they align with legal requirements and best practices.
Risk Assessment: Identify and assess potential legal risks associated with university operations and activities, recommending strategies for mitigation.
Participates in panel and committee meetings to offer legal opinions.
Legal Documents: Drafts legal documents, including Memoranda of Understanding, agreements, and conveyances.
Attends meetings to advise the University on legal matters, particularly for policy formation and other related matters.
