Music & Performance Essentials
In this class, students will experience a practical introduction to theater-specific skills and knowledge, such as storytelling, improvisation, the history of Broadway, and technical theater. They will also get acquainted with notable composers and musicians and learn to compose their creative works with instruments and digital software. Activities can include learning how to audition, stage timing, creating a scene from a show, designing a light or sound plot, recording and editing a commercial or podcast or scoring a movie clip. Emphasis is placed on personal growth through taking creative risks. Students engage in a feedback-driven process where they will learn the importance of experimentation, play, and attention to detail.
Each year, our Performing Arts Department stages two professional-quality musical productions, a highlight of the school year. These productions provide Grades 7 & 8 students with a memorable and enriching experience that combines creativity, collaboration, and the joy of performance. Our auditions are an inclusive and supportive process where every student who auditions is guaranteed a role - there are no cuts. Students are invited to showcase their abilities to play, create, act, sing, and dance during the auditions. Proficiency in any of these skills is optional. This approach ensures that every student can experience the excitement and camaraderie of being part of a musical production, instilling a sense of pride and confidence in their abilities. Past productions have included
Moana Jr, High School Musical Jr., Hairspray Jr., Matilda Jr, and Grease: The Musical.
In addition to performing, students in Grades 7 & 8 can join the tech and stage crew, where they will gain hands-on experience in lighting, sound, set design, costuming, and stage management. Activities can include creating and completing a lighting and sound cue sheet, organizing a costume plot, and programming a wireless communication system. This comprehensive approach allows students to explore all facets of theater, fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts. All Tech & Stage Crew students apply and, upon acceptance, are enrolled in the class and provide technical support for the musical productions each year.
