RECENT PROGRAMS AND EVENTS Old Saint John’s Baptist Church and Cemetery: Revisiting a Community’s Legacy of Faith History Presentation Feb. 7, 2026 Watch the Free Zoom Video Recording Old Saint John’s Baptist Church, Lancaster County’s first independent Black congregation, was formed in 1868 in Kilmarnock and the establishment of a cemetery followed soon after. At its height, the church grew to nearly 1,000 members, serving as a spiritual and cultural anchor for free-born and newly-emancipated Black families. Although the congregation dissolved by 1892, the cemetery continued for generations under the stewardship of daughter churches and is the focus of recent research and preservation efforts.
