LaFaye Copeland offers a collection of significant African-American memorabilia
For several years, Museum staff had tried to find artifacts and archival material that appropriately told the history of the African-American community of Grady County. It wasn’t until local Black leader LaFaye Copeland stepped forward and offered her meticulously gathered collection that the dream became possible. Thanks to Ms. Copeland’s generosity, the Museum now has on display an exhibit that tells the story of the African-American Grady Countian with a sensitivity and integrity that would have otherwise been impossible.
Ms. Copeland and her family and friends lived the struggle that has only recently seen the first rays of equality and hope. While clearly recognizing that things are not where they should be, there is a real sense of pride and beauty in a struggle that had some very dark moments.
