Merchandise Trade
Merchandise Trade Statistics are compiled according to the General Trade System as recommended by the United Nations.
The main data source is Customs records (ASYCUDA system); which includes information on quantity, value, country of origin and country of destination. The tariffs are based upon those of the Harmonized System [HS] Nomenclature.
Imports and exports data are also sourced from some importers and exporters of key products.
The published Tables are produced using the
HS 2017
nomenclature and the valuation of the goods is as follows:
Imports (cif) (
cost, insurance and freight
)
Domestic exports (fob) (
free on board
)
Re-exports (fob) (
free on board)
The Merchandise Trade Statistics bulletin is published quarterly and the monthly MS Excel data series (by two-digit HS code) is published monthly.

About the Bureau
In July 2010, the legal framework of the Bureau was recast and modernized and the National Statistics Bureau Act, 2005, was repealed to be replaced by the National Bureau of Statistics Act, 2010. The institution is now the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and is headed by a Chief Executive Officer.
