Athletics
At San Francisco Waldorf School, our Athletics program is an integral part of our commitment to helping students develop into well-rounded, confident people who cultivate relationships, leadership skills, and make a difference in the world.
Playing in leagues across the city and the region, our student athletes embrace our school values of teamwork, fair play, and integrity, and our competitive spirit has propelled our teams to multiple championships.
Our Athletics program in the 2025-26 school year is made up of
nine varsity teams and two sub-varsity teams: 11 teams total, across five sports, including baseball, basketball, cross country, soccer, and volleyball
. About 60 percent of our students in our High School and 80 percent in our Middle School participate on our inclusive, hard-working sports teams. Our coaches,
most from collegiate Division I-III
, share a love of their sport with their teams and model dedication to the ideals of teamwork, discipline, and integrity.

Philosophy
The Athletics Program at San Francisco Waldorf School is an integral component of the middle school and high school educational experience. In a developmentally appropriate way, Athletics aims to support physical, emotional, and social development of each student-athlete through relationships with classmates, coaches, teachers, and administrators. Through athletics, students develop and expand a sense of fairness, discipline, grit, resilience, responsibility, collaboration, and respect for others.

Our High School Boys Varsity Basketball Team earned the 2023 Division VI state championship title!
Volleyball: Five Titles in Six Years
Our Varsity Volleyball Team has the most titles of any school in any sport in the league, as BCL Champions in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019 and North Coast Section (NCS) champs in 2022 and 2024.

What sport(s) do you play now? Where?
I play beach volleyball: not with any club, just for fun. In the past, I played with Mandala Beach Volleyball and J5 Beach Volleyball.
What's one thing that stood out to you about being a student athlete at SFWS?
As a volleyball player at SFWS, it was the community fostered by the team. Even if you didn't know your teammates at the beginning of the season, by the end, we were one unit who cared deeply for everyone on the team.
What would you like prospective students and families to know about the Athletics program at SFWS?
Being an athlete at SFWS was an incredible journey for me. I not only improved as a player but also grew mentally, learning what it meant to be truly focused and look out for others. The coaches and the director of the program made me feel valued as a person, on and off the court.

“I was co-captain for the SFWHS volleyball team, and was very grateful for SFWS sports ‘no cut’ program because otherwise I would have never played volleyball. I came to volleyball practice with zero knowledge or experience. With the help of the coaches, all players, no matter their previous experience, were trained to push themselves to be the best they could be at the sport.
After one year, my fellow teammate from the first-year team and I made varsity, where we both became starters alongside other sophomores. All my teammates and I continued to grow our skills, leading us to win multiple championships. I reflect on my experience and always marvel at how if this program had cuts, I would not be the athlete or person I am today.
Being a part of Waldorf athletics was challenging, thrilling, and life-changing. Every athlete holds themselves and others to a high standard that lifts everyone up and makes a better team. The atmosphere includes ample support from coaches, staff, players, and the student body, who always shows up for every player. Even though the sport is intense and can be grueling, I always had fun.”

Meet our Athletic Director, Bryan Anderson
Bryan Anderson was a student-athlete at the University of Chicago, where he played football and graduated with a degree in Economics. After college, he spent 10 years working for hedge funds before he joined the staff at San Francisco Waldorf School, where he was first hired as assistant baseball coach in the spring of 2010. The following school year, Bryan became the Assistant Athletic Director while also coaching boys basketball. Bryan was promoted to SFWS Athletic Director in the 2012-2013 school year and has since coached the girls soccer, girls basketball, and baseball teams. He is a Registered Athletic Administrator with the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. In his free time, Bryan enjoys spending his free time with his wife exploring the outdoors in the Russian River Area and riding his motorcycle.

“I was co-captain for the SFWHS volleyball team, and was very grateful for SFWS sports ‘no cut’ program because otherwise I would have never played volleyball. I came to volleyball practice with zero knowledge or experience. With the help of the coaches, all players, no matter their previous experience, were trained to push themselves to be the best they could be at the sport.
After one year, my fellow teammate from the first-year team and I made varsity, where we both became starters alongside other sophomores. All my teammates and I continued to grow our skills, leading us to win multiple championships. I reflect on my experience and always marvel at how if this program had cuts, I would not be the athlete or person I am today.
Being a part of Waldorf athletics was challenging, thrilling, and life-changing. Every athlete holds themselves and others to a high standard that lifts everyone up and makes a better team. The atmosphere includes ample support from coaches, staff, players, and the student body, who always shows up for every player. Even though the sport is intense and can be grueling, I always had fun.”

Meet our Athletic Director, Bryan Anderson
Bryan Anderson was a student-athlete at the University of Chicago, where he played football and graduated with a degree in Economics. After college, he spent 10 years working for hedge funds before he joined the staff at San Francisco Waldorf School, where he was first hired as assistant baseball coach in the spring of 2010. The following school year, Bryan became the Assistant Athletic Director while also coaching boys basketball. Bryan was promoted to SFWS Athletic Director in the 2012-2013 school year and has since coached the girls soccer, girls basketball, and baseball teams. He is a Registered Athletic Administrator with the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. In his free time, Bryan enjoys spending his free time with his wife exploring the outdoors in the Russian River Area and riding his motorcycle.
