Welcome to the College of Information, Data and Society! Previously known as the College
of Professional and Global Education, our name reflects the academic units within
the college: the School of Information (iSchool) and the Department of Applied Data
Science (ADS). This connection highlights the significant impact of these departments
on society. The College of Information, Data and Society offers interdisciplinary
and forward-looking academic programs that prepare students to address the world’s
increasing challenges around analyzing, managing, protecting, securing, designing,
organizing and preserving data, information, records and archives through technology-oriented,
user-focused practices and solutions.

Department of Applied Data Science
The Department of Applied Data Science offers academic programs tailored to the workforce
needs for interdisciplinary talents in designing and deploying intelligent solutions
to real-world data challenges. Over 150 Silicon Valley companies, including industry
giants like Amazon, Tesla, Meta Platforms and Uber, have hired MSADI students for
internships and permanent roles. This extensive network provides invaluable connections
and inspiration for students entering dynamic tech fields.

for careers as information professionals (including in librarianship, informatics,

The Student Research Journal (SRJ), governed by graduate students at San José State
University’s School of Information, published its 30th issue this week. The publication
follows a 15th anniversary celebration held on Tuesday, Dec. 16, celebrating the journal’s
longstanding commitment to empowering student scholarship in library and information
science.

iSchool Students Find Community Through Social Movement Archives
From late November until mid-January, the San José State Martin Luther King Jr Library
displayed a vital and provoking exhibit entitled “But Often it Rhymes: Suppression,
Resistance, and Solidarity in San José”, curated by iSchool students Alena Karkanias
(MLIS ‘17), Karl Grunwald (MARA ‘17) and Elise Mills (MLIS ‘17). The exhibit’s focus
on student-led protest movements for liberation and against U.S. imperialism was particularly
resonant amid escalating authoritarianism and nationalistic violence in countries
around the world, including in the United States.

Critical Data Visualization and Historical Perspectives in Data Science with SJSU
Librarian Dykee Gorrell
Motivated by a desire to better understand the technology she relied on – both as
an academic researcher, and in everyday life – Dykee Gorrell began to teach herself
rudimentary coding and ultimately found her path leading to data librarianship.

The iSchool’s virtual learning environment fosters a truly global community, connecting
students and faculty worldwide—exemplified by Marilyn White, a school librarian in
Abu Dhabi and current SJSU MLIS student—who are able to learn from one another and
pursue their professional goals regardless of location.
