About
We believe children learn best in an inclusive, creative, and nurturing environment that engages the whole child. Students here are active partners in their education, and learning is joyful.
Academics
Academics
From its inception, Burgundy has educated children in innovative ways. Our students learn by doing. The school community and its two campuses offer a nurturing atmosphere that inspire creativity through the arts and develop critical thinking skills with an integrated curriculum and hands-on projects.
Admission

Burgundy educates children from Junior Kindergarten through grade 8. The admission process begins in the fall prior to the year in which a student enrolls.

Community
Community
Burgundy doesn’t just refer to our school or our campuses. Burgundy is a beloved community.
The Burgundy Difference
Burgundy Difference
The Burgundy community is united by its commitment to creating a learning community that affirms children for who they are and where they are developmentally and that helps all our students realize their full potential as students and as people.
Giving
Giving
The Burgundy that our students and families love and enjoy today is the product of a handful of families doing together what none could have done individually: purchasing land, rehabilitating and raising buildings, hiring a professional faculty.

Progressive Education
Progressive Education
Progressive education enjoys a long history and its practices continue to be supported by educational research. The founders of Burgundy Farm Country Day School rooted the school in a deep progressive tradition and over the years its practices have remained the bedrock upon which we grow.
At its heart, a progressive school seeks to involve all members of the community in learning. Students are given a strong voice and stake in the learning process, from deciding how to show their understanding of a given topic, to helping shape the units of study themselves. Teachers are guides and partners in the learning process and listen deeply and carefully to the students. Learning is active and experiential and often integrates various subject matter as students work towards greater understanding. Students learn beyond our four walls, utilizing both the natural environments afforded on our own campuses, as well as all the DC metro area has to offer. They go beyond this learning and take action, both through community service and social justice projects, to make positive change.
Progressive education values the heart along with the mind and because of this, time and space are given for social and emotional learning. Strong and respectful relationships among children and between teachers and students are built through regular community meetings, problem solving sessions, and shared learning experiences. Students learn to navigate relationships with peers, identify and manage their own emotions, and advocate for their needs. Students are seen as individuals and are highly valued as such. Teachers differentiate instruction, taking into account developmental needs and student interests; they seek to challenge each student, while providing scaffolding for their success.
Making connections and understanding our place in the world is central to our mission. By providing students with opportunities to be involved in learning and serving in their community from the very start, we allow them to see themselves as active participants in their world. Our students leave us with strong voices, minds and hearts.
When we came to Burgundy, we already knew that our two kids were different types of learners. One son thrives with clear structure and routine in the classroom while our other son relishes the opportunities to make choices and loves the “freedom” to explore his interests. Burgundy provides both environments simultaneously! We’ve been impressed to find that the teachers were able to determine the strengths of both our sons within the first few weeks of school and “customize” activities to appropriately challenge them.
