Accident & Emergency
Accident and Emergency started as a unit in 2001 under the same roof with GOPD and
SOPD before it was separated in 2002 and then in 2016, was made a department of the
hospital with a Head of Department.
Accident and Emergency is a mini hospital through which most of the patients that come
into the hospital passes through. It runs 24 hours per day with a 34 bedded capacity currently undergoing expansion.
Attached to the department is the Medical record, pharmaceutical outlet, side laboratory,
a procedure room and operating theatre for emergencies.
The accident and emergency has three divisions namely: Triage section, male and
female section. The first Head of Department in August, 2016 was Dr Taofik Adeyemi, who held
the position until July, 2018 when he left the service of the hospital to another tertiary health facility. Dr. Mejabi Joseph been the assistant then took over in the Acting capacity until August, 2018 when he was made the substantive Head.
The department cater for both medical and surgical emergencies and as such divided into medical and surgical units with different Medical Officers/ Residents Manning the two units.
There are adequate number of nurses in the department with the Unit heads being CNO Grace West. Majority of the nurses apart from the general training in nursing care have special training in accident and emergency care and they have been deploying their skills in the management of patients.
The hospital is the main tertiary health institution in Kebbi state with referral sometimes
from nearby states of Sokoto, Niger states.
The department takes care of about 50 patients daily with medicine account for about
60% of these cases and surgery accounting for 40%.
We have admission for different subspecialties in medicine and surgery including surgical
emergencies in the area of General Surgery, Trauma, Orthopaedics and Spine, Plastic
surgery, Urology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Oncology. Medical subspecialists like Endocrinology, Neurology, Renal, Pulmonary, Gastro-intestinal care.
