Research and clinical trials offer some patients an additional or alternative option to treatments that are considered standard care or that are not considered a good match for a patient’s specific type of disease. Clinical trials also have helped to advance the standard treatment of many types of cancer. Penn State Cancer Institute offers patients the opportunity to participate in clinical trials. These research studies are highly regulated and undergo review to ensure the scientific merit of the trial, as well as the protection of the patients who participate.
