What is the Behavioral Health Institute?
Millions of Americans experience mental health challenges every year. The symptoms related to these conditions can disrupt a person's thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. The Summa Health Behavioral Health Institute practices a patient-centered philosophy and are committed to meeting each patient's mental health needs in a holistic manner.
Our staff consists of psychiatrists, psychologists, addiction medicine providers, nurses, social workers, professional counselors and a variety of other therapists (music, recreational and art) who are dedicated to outstanding inpatient and outpatient care.
Integrated Care
Much recent growth in behavioral health has been directed toward integrating behavioral healthcare into a variety of medical practices. The intention is to bring specialty behavioral health care to non-behavioral health practices to serve patients in environments in which they're comfortable. This approach not only increases patients' comfort and trust, but it also helps non-behavioral health providers provide a wider range of support and care for their patients.
Currently, behavioral health at Summa Health is integrated into the following departments:
Primary Care
Weight Management Institute
Senior Health
Cancer Institute
Heart and Vascular Institute
Neuroscience Institute and Epilepsy Center
Women's Institute
Complex Care Institute
Summa Health Rehab Hospital
Conditions We Treat
At the Summa Health Behavioral Health Institute, we treat the full spectrum of behavioral health conditions. Treatment is available for a broad range of behavioral health issues including, but not limited to anxiety, depression, substance use, traumatic stress and schizophrenia.
Anxiety is a normal and often healthy emotion. However, when a person regularly feels disproportionate levels of anxiety, it might become a medical disorder.
Anxiety can lead to excessive nervousness, fear, apprehension and worry. It can alter how a person processes emotions and behaves causing physical symptoms. Mild anxiety might be vague and unsettling, while severe anxiety may seriously affect day-to-day living.
Anxiety disorders affect 40 million people in the United States. It is the most common group of mental illnesses in the country.
Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that affects millions of people every year. Depression negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. People with depression have an immense feeling of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home.
Symptoms can include:
Feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness or hopelessness
Angry outbursts, irritability or frustration, even over small matters
Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all normal activities, such as sex, hobbies or sports
Changes in appetite — weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting
Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much
Tiredness and lack of energy, so even small tasks take extra effort
Increase in purposeless physical activity (e.g., hand-wringing or pacing) or slowed movements and speech (actions observable by others)
Feeling worthless or guilty
Trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions and remembering things
Thoughts of death or suicide
Symptoms must last at least two weeks for a diagnosis of depression.
Drug addiction, also known as substance use disorder, is a disease that impacts an individual's brain and behavior, leading to an inability to control the use of legal or illegal drugs or medications. Substances such as alcohol, marijuana, and nicotine are also classified as drugs. When you are addicted, you may continue using the substance despite the harm it causes.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that is triggered by a terrifying event— either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event. Traumatic events affect people differently. Symptoms of conditions associated with trauma can develop soon after the event or can emerge much later, and they can last for a few days or weeks or can persist for much longer.
PTSD symptoms are generally grouped into four types: intrusive memories, avoidance, negative changes in thinking and mood, and changes in physical and emotional reactions. Symptoms can vary over time or vary from person to person.
The Traumatic Stress Center at Summa Health is dedicated to the treatment and investigation of traumatic stress and its consequences. For more information, call

Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that affects less than one percent of the U.S. population. When the disease is active, it can be characterized by episodes in which the patient is unable to distinguish between real and unreal experiences. Symptoms can include delusions, hallucinations, trouble with thinking and concentration, and lack of motivation.
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms described above, we can help. Call the Summa Health Behavioral Health Institute at
