Technical Theater - Seattle Academy
The Hub
Technical Theater
Seattle Academy’s Technical Theater program invites students to explore the art and craft of theater design and production. Students bring their creativity and problem-solving skills to life by designing shows, working on stage crews, and pursuing independent study projects, often in collaboration with local professional theaters.
Open to both Middle and Upper School students, Technical Theater classes provide the flexibility to gain a broad overview of stagecraft or to dive deep into specialized areas of design and technology.
MEET THE Arts FACULTY
STAGE MANAGEMENT
Noah Sarkowsky '17 discovered he had a talent and interest in stage management. As he pursued his interest at professional theaters in Seattle, he became passionate about creating a program at SAAS where he could pass on those skills. Supported by our faculty and staff, he submitted a proposal to the department that resulted in the creation of a student-led program still operating today. Students who Noah mentored, like Esme Decoster '18, continued to pass on those professional level skills, and our current student stage managers are supervised by our faculty and a rotation of professional stage managers from the Seattle theater community.
Middle School
Middle School Technical Theater introduces students to the wide-ranging skills that bring a production to life. Students gain hands-on experience in design and model making, lighting and electrics, carpentry and construction, materials and safety, and scenic painting. Many students discover a passion for technical theater through this class and choose to continue in Upper School Technical Theater or join backstage crews as regular volunteers.
MIDDLE SCHOOL CURRICULUM GUIDE
Upper School
Upper School Technical Theater at SAAS offers students a comprehensive introduction to the many skills that make productions possible. Coursework covers design and model making, lighting theory and electrics, carpentry and construction, materials and safety, and scenic painting. Students are invited (but not required) to join a crew for a school production, where they can apply classroom learning to real performances and gain hands-on experience in producing a SAAS show.
Beyond core coursework, students may pursue specialized opportunities through independent study projects and mentorship. In Costume Design, students can design for productions, manage wardrobes, and assist professional designers working alongside our program.
For those interested in Stage Management, SAAS offers a dedicated program in which students are mentored by faculty and professional stage managers from the Seattle community. They learn how to run rehearsals, manage backstage crews, maintain communication systems, and create industry-standard paperwork such as a calling script. Students ultimately develop the skills to independently call a mainstage production.

Call Your Own Show
Students learn how to run rehearsals, organize and maintain production communication, manage backstage crews, create industry standard paperwork like a “calling script,” and eventually develop the skills required to call an entire large production independently.
