The attention of the Management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has been drawn to the existence of a fake and unauthorized Facebook account impersonating the Chief Medical Director, Prof. (Mrs.) Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu. We wish to categorically state that this account is fraudulent and does not represent the person, office, or views of the Chief Medical Director in any capacity. Members of the public are hereby advised to disregard any information, messages, requests, or engagements from such fake account(s), as they are the handiwork of impostors seeking to mislead unsuspecting individuals. For the avoidance of doubt, Prof. (Mrs.) Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu’s authorized official Facebook page is on the link below:https://www.facebook.com/share/1ApMVbmKqH/ All official information from the Office of the Chief Medical Director is disseminated strictly through the authorized communication channels of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, including the Public Relations and Information Unit. The general public is further urged to report any suspicious account(s) to the appropriate authorities. UBTH Management remains committed to transparency, integrity, and safeguarding the public from misinformation. Signed:Osaretin Iyen ,Head, Public Relations and Information Unit.
On 26th February, 2026, in Abuja, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, met with the MD/CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency, Abba Abubakar Aliyu, to advance solar power support for the Hospital as part of efforts to strengthen and stabilize its electricity supply. The approved renewable energy intervention will complement existing supply and enhance uninterrupted power across the Hospital. Implementation begins later this year. UBTH-CARES
The Management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has noted with grave concern the circulation of false, misleading, and malicious publications targeted at the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Hospital, Prof (Mrs) Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, in some sections of social media, particularly regarding the engagement of a private laboratory service within the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Unit. Management states unequivocally that these allegations are entirely false, defamatory, and devoid of factual or legal basis, and appear calculated to mislead the public, incite distrust, and unjustly impugn the integrity of the Chief Medical Director and the institution. For clarity, the private laboratory service was engaged to complement the Hospital’s existing diagnostic services within the A&E Unit. The decision was taken strictly in the overriding interest of patient care and safety, particularly for critically ill patients whose survival depends on immediate and uninterrupted access to laboratory investigations especially when there are challenges with the UBTH laboratory in the Accident and Emergency unit. This engagement was neither arbitrary nor unlawful but fully compliant with extant Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) directives, which empower hospital managements to adopt innovative arrangements to ensure the continuity of critical healthcare services. The service is intended to function alongside the Hospital’s laboratories, augmenting capacity and efficiency, and not to replace or supplant the hospital’s core laboratory services. Indeed, there exist over ten (10) functional hospital laboratories across UBTH and they continue to operate, clearly negating any insinuation of institutional displacement or privatization. Management therefore rejects in the strongest terms the reckless dissemination of falsehoods and cautions and wish to state that the continued publication or repetition of these defamatory claims may attract appropriate legal action, as UBTH reserves the right to protect the reputation of its leadership and institution through all lawful means. Members of the public are accordingly advised to disregard these spurious allegations and rely solely on verified information issued through official channels of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. UBTH remains steadfast in its statutory mandate to deliver quality healthcare, uphold professional ethics, and safeguard lives, regardless of prevailing challenges. Signed:Osaretin Iyen,Head, Public Relations and Information Unit,For: Chief Medical Director

The attention of the management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has been drawn to a video circulating on various social media platforms featuring misleading, inaccurate, and erroneous statements expressed by Dr. Olusola Peter Okunola, a Consultant Paediatric Neurologist at UBTH.    UBTH as an institution is renowned for excellence in medical care and research, is deeply concerned by the misleading statements expressed in the video.   It is imperative to unequivocally state the following:   1. Dr. Peter Okunola does not possess the authority to represent the hospital on matters concerning the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine and its administration.   2. The views expressed by Dr. Okunola in the video are strictly his personal opinions and do not, in any capacity, reflect the official position of UBTH.   3. UBTH as a dedicated centre for administering the HPV vaccine, is committed to safeguarding public health through evidence-based medical practices.    We urge members of the public to disregard the views Dr. Okunola presented in the video. The HPV vaccine is a crucial preventive measure against HPV-related diseases, especially cervical cancer. We strongly encourage parents to ensure their daughters within the recommended age bracket receive this vaccine.   For accurate information and guidance on the HPV vaccine, please rely on official communications from UBTH and other reputable health authorities.   Prof. Stanley Okugbo Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

In a monumental stride towards enhancing cancer treatment nationwide, the Federal Government, in partnership with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), has taken a significant step by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday, March 22, 2024. This historic agreement aims to bolster oncology care across the country, with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) being among the six designated facilities set to benefit. Under the visionary leadership of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, and the Managing Director of NSIA, Mr. Aminu Umar-Sadiq, this collaboration heralds a new era in cancer treatment. The agreement entails the procurement of state-of-the-art oncology equipment for designated teaching hospitals, including UBTH, marking a crucial milestone in the fight against cancer. He emphasized the urgent need to address the growing burden of non-communicable diseases, particularly cancers, in the country. Echoing Prof. Pate’s sentiments, Mr. Umar-Sadiq highlighted the role played by NSIA in revolutionizing cancer care through the NSIA-LUTH Cancer Centre. He expressed enthusiasm for replicating this success across the country, ensuring that every Nigerian has access to world-class oncology facilities. UBTH’s inclusion in this transformative initiative underscores its critical role in advancing healthcare delivery in Nigeria. With the support of the Federal Government and NSIA, UBTH is poised to become a center of excellence for cancer patients nationwide.
