Welcome to the Muttenthalbahn light railway
All you need to know about the mining and narrow-gauge railway museum and operating days with further details on the Muttenthalbahn can be found on this page.
The working group Muttenthalbahn has been based below Schloss Steinhausen directly by the river Ruhr in Witten-Bommern since 1989.
The used premises belong to the now defunct Zeche[colliery] Theresia which closed down as far back as 1892. This mine had played a role in the early days of the mining industry south of the Ruhr. Our working group had redeveloped the listed colliery buildings which now serve as a good homestead for the museum.
We wish you an enjoyable perusal of our page and are looking forward to welcome you in the museum!

Opening days 2026
April 4, 2026
Unfortunately, we have to inform you that, for various reasons, the exact opening days for 2026 have still not been finalized.
Therefore,
there will be no Muttenthalbahn train services on Easter Sunday
, and our museum will also remain closed throughout the day (there seems to have been a misunderstanding, and we hope that no one ends up waiting at the station disappointed).
On the day of the Muttental Festival, April 26, 2026, our train will operate
a shuttle service from the Nachtigallstraße parking area to Zeche Nachtigall and back. However, it will only pass through our site without stopping. There will be no stop at Theresia, and our museum grounds will also remain closed on that day.
We hope to be able to provide you with further dates and/or information soon.
