Albertus Magnus College Mourns the Loss of Ellin M. Mulholland ’51, ’15 D.H.L.
Trailblazing Attorney, Devoted Trustee, and Generous Alumna
New Haven, Conn., March 2, 2026
–The
Albertus Magnus College
community mourns the loss of Ellin M. Mulholland ’51,’15 D.H.L., a distinguished
alumna, longtime Trustee, and generous supporter of the College, who passed away on
February 21, 2026, at the age of 95.

Ellin’s legacy became part of the enduring story of Albertus. A proud 1951 graduate
who earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in French, Ellin remained deeply devoted to
her
alma mater
throughout her life. She served on the College’s Board of Trustees from 1985 to 2013,
including as a member of the Executive Committee, offering nearly three decades of
leadership, wisdom, and steadfast support of the College’s Catholic mission.
Her service to Albertus reflected a lifelong commitment to education and advocacy.
In recognition of her extraordinary accomplishments and enduring dedication, the College
conferred upon her an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in May 2015.
Ellin carried the foundation of her Albertus education into a groundbreaking legal
career. After graduating from Albertus, she earned her law degree from Fordham Law
School, where she was one of only two women in her graduating class. She went on to
become Senior Partner at the New York City firm of Herzfeld & Rubin, practicing in
construction litigation and products liability. She was among the first women litigators
in the torts and products liability field in New York City, and one of the first two
women named to the American Board of Trial Advocates.
While achieving distinction in her profession, Ellin remained a leader in the broader
community. In addition to her long service to Albertus, she served on the Board of
Governors of the Association of Trial Lawyers of the City of New York, was a past
Vice President of the Guild of Catholic Lawyers, lectured on Trial Practice, and served
as a judge for the National Trial Advocacy program at the U.S. Eastern District Courthouse.
She was also a member of the Papal Order of Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulchre
of Jerusalem.
After many years of extraordinary work in the law, Ellin retired and moved to her
beloved summer home in Hampton Bays. She was remembered as a zealous advocate for
her clients and her family, a loving sister and aunt, and a loyal and generous alumna
to both of her alma maters. Though she has departed this earthly realm, her legacy
of love, leadership, and devotion to education endures.
A Mass of Resurrection was held on February 28, 2026 at St. Rosalie’s Church in Hampton
Bays.
Ellin Mulholland’s life reflects the very best of Albertus Magnus College: intellectual
excellence, faith, service, and an unwavering commitment to lifting others. The College
extends its deepest condolences to her family and friends and gives thanks for her
remarkable life and decades of devoted service to Albertus.

Way to a Second Century strategic plan, with a bold vision to "be a destination liberal
arts-based college, distinguished in its interdisciplinary and experiential approach
to education, rooted in Dominican values, that prepares students for lifelong civic
