Access information
Please note that some galleries may close at short notice due to weather conditions, particularly during colder and hotter months.
On 24 April 2026, the Sacred Silver and Stained Glass galleries will open to the public from 13:30, following maintenance works.
The
Fashion Gallery (Room 40)
is closed to undergo a period of redevelopment and will reopen in Autumn 2028.
The
South Asia Gallery (Rooms 41
&
47B)
is closing to the public from Monday 2 March for refurbishment and will reopen in Spring 2028.

is closed from 9 April for a major gallery rotation and will reopen on 30 April 2026.

We have 13 accessible toilets. The nearest Changing Places toilet is at the
Science Museum

Cloakrooms
Cloakrooms are located at both the Cromwell Road and Exhibition Road entrances.
Open 10.00 – 17.30 daily (10.00 – 21.30 on Fridays).
Luggage is charged per item:
£3 – Coats, small bags (smaller than an average cabin bag), umbrellas, child scooters
£5 – Cabin bags (56 × 45 × 21cm)
£7 – Larger bags, folding bikes and adult scooters
Luggage with wheels, and bags larger than 56 × 45 × 21cm, are not allowed in the galleries. As part of our security procedures we may ask to search your bag.
E-bikes, e-scooters or similar devices containing rechargeable batteries are not permitted in our cloakroom or anywhere on our premises due to the potential fire hazard they present. They can be stored outside the building where bike storage is provided.
Drones are not permitted in our cloakroom or anywhere on our premises.

Visitors are welcome to carry bottled water in our galleries. Packed lunches can be enjoyed in our Garden, Exhibition Road Courtyard and the Learning Centre Lunchrooms (outside of school visiting hours).

Garden
On 24 April 2026, the garden will be open to the public from 13:30, following maintenance works.
The John Madejski Garden is open from 10.00 – 16.00 Monday to Sunday. Please note we will begin to close the garden from 15.40.
This hidden oasis in the centre of the building is a fantastic location to rest and reflect during your visit.
To keep the garden at its best we ask that you:
Use the pond responsibly and respect our lawns
Do not feed the birds
Do not smoke or vape
Use the bins provided
Do not tamper with the water jets in the pond
Do not use buckets, spades, and water toys
Always accompany children
Visitors are welcome refresh their feet in the pond, however running, splashing, swimming, and sitting in the water are not permitted. Users of the garden must remain fully clothed.
The Garden Café will be open from 14:00 on 24 April 2026.
